My son is a 16-year-old sophomore in high school. He has had anxiety and depression for four years and has been on 20mg Prozac for the four years. His case is very severe; He has had lately, and in the past, thoughts of suicide and has not been going to school, and I’m very worried that I will get in trouble from the police and take my son away. I know that they take away parents and children that don’t go to school because of drugs, alcohol, ect., but will they be harsh on me and my son knowing that he has had these problems for a good amount of time? Will they take me or my son away because he has been missing school? He has been involved in Kaiser Psychiatry Department for 4 years and has a therapist he very much likes, if this matters.

First and foremost i sympathize with your situation.. Ok this is what you need to do… You must contact the school and make them aware of the situation and your sons condition and how severe the situation is, You need to then see your sons Gp asap and inform the Gp that your son is having suicidal thoughts and is feeling v depressed and does not want to go to school, ask the Gp for help more support for your son and for yourself ask the Gp if there are any other services he can introduce you too to help you and your son… Also ask the Gp where you stand legally with your son not wanting to go to school, and would he write a letter to the school or give your son some kind of sick note to cover yourself. But most of all your son needs more help and your gp should be able to help.. But you must tell him or her… good luck

You can get in trouble if your son becomes truant, which is when he isn’t in school for a certain number of days out of the school year. Have you spoken to the school? They may be able to help you with this and help you figure out a way to get his schooling done that will accomidate him as well as help you not become truant.

Contact the school to try to even prevent it from being reported due to the becca bill. And if this ever does go to court then it will surely be dropped and you or your baby cant get into trouble. Yes the factor that he has been in a hospital or whatever its called does indeed make a huge difference. As long as ytou have the documentation of it you will not get in trouble.

Well on my opinion its unlikely of them to blame you for whats happening, Why? Well you have prove that you’re actually taking care of whats happening and those proves are him taking medication to keep on with life while he is suffering from depression and two you can use doctors as witnesses (in case PD gets involve) to prove that you been a good parent and you’re trying to help your child.
Anyhow you you should try to talk to your child school counselor about this matter because he is suffering from depression but absents in school are the key to more problems.Good Luck

So long as your son has a legitimate disorder and you can obtain proof from a doctor then you will not be in any trouble. You do need to keep the school in the loop but in my experience they are usually very understanding and supportive.
You seem to me to be a good mother in a bad situation. Just keep doing what you are doing to help your son and yourself and don’t worry about the school situation. Education is important but if your son is in that head space it is no longer top priority.
