Why are people such hypocrites when it comes to drugs?

A preacher in my town got busted recently using Oxycontin that was not prescribed to him, and there are rumors he is also addicted to meth.

A month ago, the SON of a POLICE CHIEF near my town was arrested in another state while purchasing heroin.

Instead of condemning drugs and drug users, why can’t they speak more honestly, and say something like,

“Well, drug use can be bad, and it can cause you medical problems. But drug users and addicts should be treated with compassion. Their problem is a medical problem, not a criminal problem.”

Why can’t we ever get that sort of sense out of these hypocrites?

First, people try them and they get addicted. They know what it does to their body and try to keep other people from harming themselves but because the person is already addicted they can’t stop.

How does the drug use of one’s child show that you are a hypocrite? Children are often rebellious and try to avoid walking in the footsteps of their parents. As for the preacher, well there are hypocritical people in all walks of life but seeing our religious leaders is probably the most shocking since we expect them to uphold the values of the church.

That’s world, expect it but don’t fret over it.

I wouldn’t say it always a medical problem either sometimes people are just having fun and they are not addicted to anything because they do drugs in moderation

It’s more of social problem than anything, bad choices

Compassion usually does not work with drug addicts, because they become pros’s at manipulation.

Family member of a drug addict…. Who has tried to be nice… but has only been lied to, taken advantage of, and stolen from.

Or, how about: Some police officers (a much lower percentage than the general population, but high profile because it IS so rare, and thus news), and some preachers (same comment), as well as others, behave criminally and take drugs.
They are acting like criminals and should be prosecuted because their behavior endangers others, as these substances don’t just intoxicate or otherwise impair present abilities, but permanently damage them such that they are permanently impaired and thus not just unable to do their jobs but actually may cause them to be dangerous, as well as addicted and likely to do anything for the next “fix”.

No, thank you. Compassion for people who do stupid things is not in my repertoire. Love? Yes, and a firm “No, that’s a bad idea and you have to pay for that” as well.

Politicians are the biggest hypocrites when it comes to drugs. Most of them have done them. They talk and crack jokes about it. When it’s their kids getting arrested, they will plead for them with no end, and try to convince the populace that jr. is somehow more special than everyone else’s kid.

But then they pass policy after policy making penalties harsher, exc. Themselves, they can laugh at. You, they will lock away.

First of all if the preacher went up and said that he had a drug problem… how many teens might end up picking it up if its okay for a preacher why not them??? Oxycontin is very addictive and if he was on it before he might have been embrassed etc to ask for help… especially being a man of the cloth….

Secondly, I don’t believe the police chief told his son to go to the next town to get drugs…. so he wouldn’t get caught…. we try to bring our kids up and teach them right from wrong but…. it doesn’t mean they will do what we wish…..

When it comes to drug addiction it’s tough love stance… it sucks and is hard but hopefully the fear of getting caught and being embrassed will deter some from even doing drugs….. compassion will not.
Compassion makes it acceptable.

It’s not even a medical problem for everyone. As Dr. Drew of “Love Line” once said, if you have a lot of brain cells, you can afford to do drugs. The problem is, a lot of people don’t, even in college. The other thing is, there’s a sh!tload of misinformation and disinformation about drugs, because both sides have their propaganda, and the people who have a vested interest in the drug war or in their own “moral superiority” (or an imaginary feeling thereof) have more to gain by muddying the waters than by allowing scientific fact to prevail.

It is crazy. But that is what the law enforcement industrial complex wants. They need criminals to justify their high paying job. Granted there are criminals, but the majority of the people that do drugs are not. They need help. The DEA costs the taxpayers billions of dollars to bust Johnny on the corner for selling meth. Johnny would be out of business if the DEA let the meth addicts get it at clinics and help at the same time.

I agree with most of what you are saying, except the part about drug addicts should be treated with compassion.

Cause all the drug addicts I know choose this life. Not only do they choose this life, they steal from their families, lie to their families, they commit identity fraud more than you know, and they can be dangerous.
So, I do not feel sorry for them. I do hope they recover, and if that means being tough on them, then so be it.

My brother’s wife’s brother…lol….stole my nephews xbox 360, dsi, their home computer, a guitar, and their digital movie camera and traded it all for meth. my sister in law has so much f***ing compassion for him that he continues to show up high at their house at 3am only to steal from them and she always lets him in regardless. Then she cries cause all her sh** is gone….he just got out of 30 days in jail for stealing from her and she let him back in,,,,infact, he is there now……NO COMPASSION

Some (all of the ones you mention included) drugs are extremely harmful if not used right, and should be controlled.

Unless these people were all verbally anti-drug, then I fail to see how they are hypocrites. Much like how I fail to see how robbers, gang members, and murderers are hypocrites. They break the law as well.

Should we stick these people in prisons if they get caught? Yes. Does that mean we should treat them the same as rapists? No, but it doesn’t mean they’re not criminals. They’re just more likely to be on the same level as they guy who wrote a couple phony checks rather than the guy that shot up an elementary school.
