I was driving in my mommy van and my nine year old son asked me this question. I had three answers but want to know what others think
my thoughts were
1. hypocrite
2. enabler
3. someone just doing their job

He’s not doing anything illegal or immoral; unless he thinks it is immoral. What you think (plural you) doesn’t make a bit of difference. I think some rap music should be illegal, but that doesn’t make it so.

Just doing his or her job. It would be the same thing if the clerk were selling perfume or bananas and used neither of them.

3. Someone doing their job. The person is a cashier. I’m sure the store sells lots of things.

The person is non-judgmental so not necessarily a hypocrite.

The person may have needed a job and took the one he or she got.

The first two are rude and inappropriate, the clerk is doing their job, they are not enabling or hypocritical, that is their job. Understand the difference? The correct answer is, INTELLIGENT.

Since alcohol and cigarettes are both legal products, the store clerk is just “someone who is doing their job” Honestly, no different than someone who is a vegetarian working in a grocery store selling meat or vegetarians waitresses serving those meat products.
