You have to let the apron strings go sooner or later,I let my son drink alcohol at 17 as long as it was in my presence.He is now a 30yr old husband and father,who only drinks on special occasions

Well he needs to know that you can be put in JAIL for providing him alcohol. He needs to understand that in your house, your rules are NO DRINKING. If his father lets him drink, his father can be put in jail for providing alcohol to a minor. Yeah, my parents let me get away with trying a glass of wine here and there, but I wasn’t going off to parties or drinking cases with my parents!

Your son needs to understand that this behavior is not appropriate, at least for another 4 years. He’s going to “hate” you, but he’ll grow out of his phase. His father is being the “cooler” parents right now, and at 17, he probably wants to be a stud in front of his friends.

Try talking to a local police office again. They should have DARE counselors who give classes at schools.

Also, talk to his father. He needs to understand that this is not acceptable to you. If he persists and continues, maybe you can speak to a lawyer about getting full custody? Since providing alcohol to a minor IS illegal.

ok, coming from a 20 yo. i can tell you i did the the same thing to my parents my parents where together but one would tell me go drink and screw all i want and the other wanted me to be responcible young adult. hmm 17 well make him first most understand that no matter what if he drinks to not drive that you will always be there to help him if he needs a ride or drinks to much and not lecture him at first. his safety should be first. i can tell you that even if your x said no drinking he still would if he is the party type and at least he is drinking with a adult maybe not a responcible one but he im sure wont let him od. or drive. tell your son that you care for him and love him and just dont want him to drink irresponcibity not to not drink at all just to think and do well in life. i hope for the best result in your situation good luck

You should report you x to the police…its against the law to give minors alcohol.

my dad is an alcoholic too he quit drinking when i was 7 but he was still drinking VERY heavily when my brother was that age. My brother was the partying type and yes there were PLENTY of days that he came home drunk at that age. However at 38 he is no where near an alcoholic. What my mom did was say to him one time when he was about 11 or 12 was “I know you know, I know you will if you want to, and i know i can’t stop you”. I am sorry but my mom was right you can;t stop him. There was one time when my brother came home a few years later and he was drunk and my mom looked at him and said “Don’t you EVER think you look ANY different then your father”. Which again was true. My brotehr just listened to the advice didn’t really shug it off, my mom didnt try too hard to take alchol away from him because she knew that it very well could backfire. My brother was also very resposible when he drank though, his moto is to always make sure you are ok. Meaning if he knew he was going to go drinking at a friends house, he would bring the car home first. I am not saying hes never been arrested for a DUI before, he has but hes 38 and he hasn’t since he was in his early 20′s. My brother also taught me how to drink resposibly. IT was an unsaid rule that i could drink but only at family parties and i made the rule of only when my brother was there…he always has lived out of state since i was 4 (hes 14 years older then me). I could also only have one drink maybe 2 at the very most. So i drank about once every 6 months give or take. I never drank with my friends because i was allowed to get the alcohol i craved at home in a controled situation. I think all kids crave alchol or at least most do in their teenage years. I think with a parent being an alcoholic that it makes it almost feel like a normal thing to do. So i would limit what he is allowed to do however don’t say absolute no…i think that is just pushing him into being irresposible. Since you are the sober parent then you need to teach your children how to drink resposibly and that isn’t nessarily saying NO. Alcohol isn’t a horrible thing if you know how to drink…and in certain families it something that needs to be taught not an automatic…but i truely don’t think waiting till hes 21 to try to teach him how to be resposible with it is wise becase remember hes gonna be going off too college in a couple years so you better teach him before he goes before hes on his own and learns the hard way.

When i went off to college i probably drank too much at first…but it was a little phase i went through as my brother did. However I am almost 24 and i hardly drink at all i drink every few months and the farthest i go is gets tipsy. My brother i think drinks regularly bet no more then one beer a night. So it is possible for you to teach your soon how to be resposible with it.

I see that he becomes the mean drunk as my family isn’t that type but my suggestion for that is to say ok, no more drinking for now until we sit down and have a game plan in tack…meaning if you allow him to drink he has a limit of how much is allowed or there are consequences. Talk to his dad about this as well and see if you can come up with a solution that works for everyone.
