What are the chances of me becoming an alcoholic?

My grandfather and father was both alcoholics and they both died from it im married and have a 2 year old son i don’t want to become like my father and grandfather i try my best to stay away from alcohol my wife would scold me about it every time i drink and remind me of my family history i don’t want to follow in my grandfather and father’s footsteps how can i prevent this from happening?

Join al anon and keep no alcohol in your home and don not drink any alcohol under any circumstances. If that is too hard then stick to a low alcohol drink or leave the place.

My dad drinks a lot of wine and he has had a heart attack because of it. I have to be very careful as I found myself on the alcohol round about and it can be very hard to get off once you get on. So try not to get on it in the first place.

find some nice christian people who don’t drink any wine and hang out with them (but first make sure they aren’t some cult that will take all your money or some wacko who thinks they are jesus or think that its ok for a man to have a dozen wives)

preventive measures. When ever you get a craving pull out a photo of your son, picture yourself as your son and how he sees you. Use how you felt seeing your father, and grandfather drink, or them passing away as a result of alcoholism and picture how he would feel. Also know that it’s a harsh cycle, if you can stop the addiction/craving then your son won’t have to go through what you have. Also call or text your wife as you said she scolds you for drinking, she’s your rock talk to her when you get cravings. But the first option should work the best, I’m sure you don’t want your son becoming an alcoholic.

Seriously.
My dad was an alcoholic and so was my brother. I am one as well, tho I quit 26 years ago. I have a glass of wine when I go out to dinner sometimes. That’s it. Make up your mind not to. Chances are if you haven’t started drinking by now, you probably won’t.

Point made was abstain from alcohol. With the previous family history this is going to be your best bet. Suggestion, start a hobby. Collect books, build models, tie fishing flies, the list is endless. Or simply spend more time with your wife and kids. They’ll love you for it!

I’ve worked for 20 years in Long Term Care and I have seen too many people, men and women, come in with Alcoholic Psychosis from pickling their brains for years. Not to mention those that were just waiting to die because they couldn’t get a transplant because of their age, alcohol addiction, and medical or personal history.

Think of your family. Think they would be better off without you in the picture? NO!

Also consider your liver. Take it from someone who needed a Liver Transplant, not because of alcohol, but Tylenol. I wasn’t even really a drinker the occasional Jack & Coke when out with friends or one beer on a really hot day, that was it.

I died twice while waiting for a transplant, very liberating I suggest everyone try it at least once.

If you must, chose NA Beer (too many to list and still has 0.5 % alcohol) and Fre Wine (frewines.com) and Fre Champagne (even has 2 flavors Brut and Spumante).

Then there is Black Zero Alcohol Free Whiskey and Blue Zero Alcohol Free Vodka.

Remember to also steer clear of OTC meds like Nyquil that has a 25% alcohol content.

Also most chewing gums as they have Sugar Alcohol, seen as Xylitol, Sorbitol, Isomalt,Glycerol, etc… I was a daily gum chewer so this bummed me out. I learned that little tidbit after it almost killed me.

While waiting for my liver transplant I caught a cold, and I did what I usually did, chug some Nyquil. I also had chewed through most of a pack of gum that day. I was awoken by throwing up copious amounts of blood (lost 4 pints and you only have 13 pints in your body)

the sign of you being one is when you start drnking by yourself. pretty much only do it with friends and social gatherings. not when youre stressed, because thats when it begins..
