long story short my mother is a mean horrible lady and i have told her i want nothing to do with her. she wont stop harrassing me and my son and threatening me with courts and cfs. not that i have anything to hide. my mother is mad because she has seen him 5-6times in almost 6 months and when ive finally had enough and said i am not going to have anything to do with her she says she will ruin my life./ she smokes 5 packs a day and is a big alcoholic. i am not sure what to do. she is the type of person that will do anythingin her power to take my son away just because i told her she wont have anything to do with him in his life. if you knew her you wouldnt want her in your life either. serious answers only

Why does she have so much influence in your life? If you are serious about disassociating yourself and your son…just do it. She has no authority over you…you’re grown…or are you…..~~~~W

If you’re the parent, it’s your responsibility to protect your son. Therefore, your mother doesn’t have a leg to stand on. You are perfectly within your rights to deny her access to him if you feel his health or safety is at risk. Let her try to sue you or call CFS. It’ll be a waste of her time and money. (You may have to get a lawyer, but it’ll be worth it.)
You might want to consider going to your local police department and seeing about a restraining order if you feel she’s going to harm either of you or kidnap him.

She can’t take him away from you…but she can sue yu for visitaion. More and more countries are recognizing Grandparents rights. Course she would have to have the money to do it. RElax…more than likely she will give up.

your mom sure sounds like a case. but treat her with charity. your child is watching and you want to set a good example. as for smoking 5 packs a day – that is bad but not illegal so just set a rule that she cannot smokein your childs presence. set visiting times for mom that you will honor as long as certain behavior is exhibited (no drinking, smoking, harrassing) they can be short visits for 20-30 minutes. you cannot choose your relatives. and your son may not see her as you do so nurture their relationship. you will be the hero in the long run

Chances are she will not be able to do anything. We had this problem with my ex-husbands mother and when we looked into it, there were no laws what so ever concerning grandparents in our state.

Honey,it sounds like your Mom really needs more help than you can give her. Does she have any other family that you can talk to about her? Maybe if you could get her to go to an AA meeting. If she smokes five to six packs a day she’s killing herself. This is one thing I know about. Five of my immediate family are dead today because of smoking. Maybe if you talk to her in a way that she wouldn’t get angry. Maybe if you ask her to please not smoke and drink so much because you want her to live to see her grand son grow up. Believe me Sweetie, she hates herself and that is so pitiful. I’ll be praying for you.

Document every time she does something wrong to you or your baby that way if she takes you to court you will have something to show. Tell her if she doesn’t change she will not be able to be in you and your son’s lives.

she can not take your child away from you. If it really is as big a problem as you say and you want to stop all contact and possibly ruin any future chance of a relationship with your mum, you need to be sure you want to do this….get a restraining order. This is not something to do lightly because if she breaks it it will need to be reported and you need to understand what the consequenses will be. Good luck for you and your child
