What can I do to help someone close to me who’s changing personalities and has an alcoholic parent?

My cousin and I used to be extremely close, best friends since pretty much since we were born…but things have changed since he started high school. He’s become increasingly rebellious and dark, sort of a loner holing himself up in his room to play (Insert random violent video game name here) and we never seem to talk anymore, he never seems to want to hang out and the way he acts, I don’t exactly want his company either…

Some of his recent choices have been, I’ll be blunt, pretty stupid…he used to be a total clown and fun to hang with, and now he’s incredibly irritable and has emotionally flat-lined. He’s also in a position of being the son of an alcoholic parent whose behavior has only gotten worse as time has passed on, and the two have frequently butted heads as of late. I just don’t know how to interact with him anymore, and I’ve only been honest with him about how he’s changed like two times… we used to talk and share everything with each other and now it’s like he won’t have anything to do with me…I’m a little hurt and very worried about what goes on behind closed doors, and truly want to be there for him, but how can you help someone who won’t acknowledge you?

There are so many parents, both moms & dads, that just up and leave their children.. Or lose custody and don’t fight to get it back. My mother lost custody of me when I was 8 & my sisters were 1, and 4. She never attempted to get us back. She when on to develop a more extreme addiction to crystal meth, and never looked back.

My sons father never even attempted to get to know him. He left when I was 4 months pregnant. I don’t understand how someone could just flat out not care, not have guilt, and not want to have their children.

How could somebody do this? How can someone just NOT care? Call me crazy, but I freak out leaving my son overnight, more less just giving up on him & not caring.

Any advice for someone who has an addiction?

Some people turn to alcohol to make them feel good. Others turn to nicotine. I, turn to caffeine (pop and chocolate). Somedays I just crave caffeine. Other days, I turn to it because I pitty myself. I have an addiction. Has anyone else had this same problem? I want out. I have a 5 month old son. I need to get out of this unhealthy eating habit. Any advice or tips?

My adult life has been rearranged to what I had hoped it would be because of alcohol. It affected my personal relationships, my family, my son and many friends. My problem is not what I drink, because that may average 4 drinks a year. My problem is with how it has affected the people I love and care about. Second-hand alcohol. To the best of my knowledge, tobacco has never killed multiple members of a family or friends in an auto accident at 1 time. Alcohol is addictive, harmful and dangerous. Yet it is still advertised and promoted and the alcohol industry is aware of the problems is causes. Are they not partly to blame for the problems it has caused for millions of people? How should this question be posted-food&drink, family&relationships,health,politics and govern-ment or society&culture?
I smoke and I don’t blame anyone but me. I don’t think advertising alcohol should be allowed because if someone is trying to quit it just complicates their problems.

Stage 3 to die with alone! He was charged with domestic assault on 08-24-2007 after nearly 30 yrs of being together! I am an orphan with a sis in CA et a sis in Cedar Falls, but that f-er turned 2 of my 3 sons against me by his drunken/drugged mind that I WAS THE 1 WITH THE PX! I see 0 lite, 7 would rather be dead than to be homeless, jobless, dying, et grieving 4 our GOOD YRS, et 4 my sons! Please help me 2 find the Strength 2 keep getting up each day! His name is ‘RED’ or Dennis J. Conrad from Brandon, Iowa et was raised by a drunken, child molesting father, et a mother that did not PROTECT her babes! My man’s best friend served time 4 raping a mentally challenged female, et his other best friend turned on me as he’s “scared shitless” I’ll tell his wife Judy that he smokes pot with my man! BFD! What a puss! My man was great til he learned 2 cook meth with his friend, ‘BUD’ & that’s when the physical abuse 1st began! I cannot keep up this fight without support & he’s taken it

My son is 16 years old & is in the hospital with blood alcohol poisoning. He was found unconsious on the side of a street. I have set up arrangements for a 10 day outpatient program, but I am still afraid of how to deal with this as a mom. I am hoping someone can help me with my fears. Thank-you
Thank You for the great responses. I am greatful for the honesty & advice. The Dr. said that he is very lucky, the CAT scan & MRI showed no brain damage,( that was a fear of his) WE spoke with his friends & they said he drinks all the time, so do they, its not a problem! OMG, These kids are 15-17 years old!!! Anyways, I will look into alanon & maybe revise my schedule to be home more. Also, Thanks for reminding me about not critisizing… He is dealing with the death of a dad, although it has been 4 years ago last week, it still haunts him. I will take the advice and talk To him instead of At him, but stay strong with my parameters.

How do you stop resenting someone?

I’ve been with my partner for 5 yrs and am having a hard time letting go of the resentment I have toward his brother. His brother in his 30s, collecting unemployment and uses people to get by. He treats his “girlfriend” like crap and makes cracks about her weight. He talks about other women like their objects and smokes weed in front of his young son (who seems to think it’s normal and picked up on some of his behaviors). I also resent him because everything just seems to fall into his lap. His g/f takes him on trips to other countries/states, he has job offers all the time and they told him to take his time and let them know when HE wants to work, etc. It makes me so angry because I’ve been struggling trying to find a job and make ends meet and feel he doesn’t deserve these things because of the person he is. I also resent that my partner just laughs along with it and overlooks what he does even though I feel it’s disrestpectful. I try bringing this up but it always starts an argument. My partner feels torn because I don’t like going to visit with his brother and be a part of the family, but he doesn’t understand that his brother’s behavior makes me uncomfortable. What is your opinion? Is there any way to move on and stop resenting him for the sake of my relationship? Please help.
