basicly my son will soon be turning 17, nearly all of his mates are 17 too, some older than 17, and a few younger. and he wants to have a big birthday celebration with about 40 of his friends. Now I don’t have a problem with that number of people around our house and garden, but i was wondering what would happen if the police we’re called out over a noise complaint or something, and they turn up to find a lot of drunken 17 year olds? Would i be fined or anything because they were at MY house?
Now i will point out to any people un-aware of the laws regarding alcohol in england, that in england the age you can drink and buy alcohol is 18. The law also says that if you are having a meal in a pub/bar you can buy beer/cider/wine at 16, aslong as someone over 18 buys it FOR you, i.e it’s not your money. And the law also says that in the privacy of your own home, a child as young as 5 can be GIVEN any alcoholic beverage they wish by a parent/guardian. (yes, i know that last law is ridiculous, but it’s still the law).
so as my son and most of his friends would be underage by 1 year, would the police mind? or would they turn a blind eye because at least these teenagers arent going around getting drunk on the streets, but are in a safe controlled enviroment?

And a quick note to anyone here who says anything about my ‘bad morals’ or “he shouldn’t drink anyway hes too young”, i wasn’t asking about that, i was wanting to know what what likely happen if the police were called down and saw the party. I think people need to face the fact that teenagers have ALWAYS drank underage and ALWAYS will, so it’s up to us as parents to make sure they know the conesequences of it and the dangers of it. Other than that i don’t mind my son drinking as he is only underage by 1 year…

Liability issues for my son’s birthday party?

I’m throwing a party for my son’s birthday at my mom and dad’s, and they’re concerned about potential lawsuits. So I have 3 areas where legal insight would be greatly appreciated:

Alcohol: My husband and I would like to have a keg there for the adults. My parents are concerned that if we provide alcohol, they could be sued if someone drives from our property drunk. I thought that property owners could be sued no matter what, even if party guests brought their OWN alcohol. Does it really matter WHO purchases the alcohol if guests leave my mom and dad’s drunk? We don’t plan on letting people drive home intoxicated, but you can only control grown people to an extent. Are there any legal precautions/disclaimers that we can use to prevent a lawsuit involving alcohol?

My parents have a swimming pool. Can guests sue if they are injured in the pool? What precautions can be taken to prevent a lawsuit concerning the pool?

I have a friend whose husband gets into fights at practically every social event. Can the actions of an individual like him get my parents sued since they are the property owners where the event will be hosted?

Any advice would be appreciated. I am a nervous wreck about this. The state is Texas, by the way.
Covering the pool is not an option, because it is a party, and we want our guests to be able to go swimming and have a good time.

There is nothing abnormal about having alcohol present for a party at someone’s house, regardless of the occasion. Even if we don’t BUY any alcohol, what are we going to do, tell grown people that they can’t bring their own alcohol to drink? How ridiculous would that seem?
I agree about my friend’s husband not attending though. I don’t want that asshole coming anyway, I’m just not sure how I’m going to tell my friend who has always bent over backwards for me.
And “Senor Snarky” is right. It’s gonna be a hum-dinger! I guess my expectations are just too high by hoping that everyone will behave like adults.
Insurance for the party sounds like a great idea. How much does that usually cost?

My daughter will be 1 year old in Feburary. I am very excited to through her a party. I also have a son who will be celebrating his third birthday in March but the last 2 birthdays his grandparents (my in-laws) showed up with their own booze. How do I tell them i want an alcohol free birthdays this year. It soooo imbarasing when they can’t handle them selves around company. It’s a child birthday party for crying out loud. I wish they would leave the booze at home. It’s not like my husband and I don’t drink but there is a time and place for it. They are great people so I don’t want to hurt their feelings. Any advice out there?

Son escapes underage party before police arrive?

My 16 year old son asked to go on a “sleep over” at a friend’s home. Turns out many of his friends were there to drink alcohol and smoke pot, which I am certain my son also does. The party got loud. My son left just before the police arrived. The police mostly notified parents to pick up their kids. But they arrested one underage teen for possession of marijuana and the 19 year old daughter of the family who lives there on the charge of “making real property available for minors to consume alcohol.” The parents were not home that night.

I feel some shared responsibility for the daughter’s arrest. I would like to teach my son to feel the same. (If nobody came to this party, there wouldnt have been a problem.) I just dont seem to have the imagination to think of something we can do to show my son’s responsibility for his part in this incident. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

My in laws want to serve beer at their son’s coming home party but I don’t want that how do I tell them nicely?

Like I think its totally inappropriate. There will be lots of 18-21 year olds there including my husband (the guest of honor), myself (a girl with a tummy “full of babt lol), and friends. My husband made a friend at his US ARmy Training Base so he decided to spend his two week Leave with our us because he only has a step dad and him mom had him out of wedlock. Anyway, first I don’t think it is ethical to give guests of any age alcoholic beverage unless they can show us a plan for how they intend to get home without driving. How do I tell them it is not a good idea?

How to let an old grumpy neighbor about a party?

For several years a neighbor and I have not gotten along(we dont talk to each other at all anymore). I will be having a graduation(h.s.) party for my son in the backyard. There will be loud music and lots of people. It will be in the afternoon, no alcohol will be served at this party. I dont want to give him a reason to complain or be even grumpier. I just want to let him know.

My son is turning 18 years old. And has planned a party. He has told me that more than likely there will be alcohol that his friends will bring. Will I get in trouble if I allow them to bring it in. There was alcohol but he is only 20. What will happen. If he pleads guilty does he just pay the fine and that is the end or will he get in trouble for alcohol being there. how will it effect his records?
it doenst say anything about posession the ticket just says “loud party”
also, would they ask about alcohol when he goes to court or will only the offense listed by mentioned

My son graduated high school this year and we need help planning and coming up with ideas for the party. Family friends, his friends, and relatives will attend so we need activities for all ages. Also any decor ideas/special touches would be helpful. His colors are greens, browns, and blues–he’s a nature lover.
