My fiance can’t drink because of some genetic disorder. He can only describe it in the words that I am about to describe it. He doesn’t know what to call it, he just knows he cant drink alcohol, because his body can’t metabolize the alcohol. He asked me to look it up for him, but I can’t unless I know what I’m looking for. He asked his mom, and she didn’t know either.
When he was 14, he got sick, so he took some Nyquil. It has 10% alcohol in the bottle, you know. He only took a half of the measuring cup for the dose. Three days later, in lunch at school, he doubled over in pain, in the general area of his liver. The pain lasted about twenty minutes, and the school nurse gave him aspirin for a stomach ache (not the brightest nurse). He got home and the pain came back. The pain got worse. His body temp went up (its already high to begin with, about 98.8), he started sweating. He began to vomit a dark chocolate colored metalic tasting substance. They took him to the hospital. The doctors gave him liquid charcoal, thinking he’d been poisoned. About an hour after arriving at the hospital, he threw up the dark metalic tasting stuff, this time followed by the charcoal as well. They took an ultrasound to see if they could see what was wrong with him, to see if there was visible damage. They saw abnormality on his liver. They ran a blood test to see if he’d been poisoned and his blood alcohol level was through the roof (.16) which is odd because he doesn’t drink. The doctors asked if he’d had anything to drink with alcohol and he mentioned the Nyquil. He said that he’d only had two tablespoons of Nyquil. The doctors said that his blood alcohol level was the equivalent of having drank 12 oz of jack daniels, which is extreme for a 14 year old. Back then, the formula for the giant family bottle of Nyquil contained %25 alcohol. The doctor asked his mom if her alcohol tolerance was high or low. she said it was low, to which the doctor explained that her son (my fiance) is allergic to alcohol.
