Looking for answers from actual law enforcement please. My son is in high school and wants to be a state trooper when he gets older. His father (which he doesn’t have any contact with because I have had sole custody for the last 5 years) is a criminal. He has been in jail for burglary,breaking and entering, recieving stolen property, providing a minor with alcohol, drug paraphanalia, 2 OUI’s, 3 OAS’s, and the last child molestation (he molested our daughter). My son is worried that because of his father’s bad reputation and criminal record that it may hurt his chances of getting into law enforcement. As his mother, I have never been in trouble for anything and he has never been in trouble for anything himself. Being in law enforcement have any of you seen someone get turned down because of criminal history in the family, or are we just worried about nothing? It would really crush him if he found out this could ruin his chances, he has talked about nothing else for the last 4 yrs.

When we did the background checks for prospective employees, we also looked at family members and associates. We looked at what sort of contact the prospect had with the family member or friend. if your son has no contact with the biological father, the agencies I dealt with would not have any problem. there are some agencies that would not want to risk hiring him because of the closeness of the relationship, however most law enforcement agencies would give him a chance. All new hires are on probation for a year or so anyway. and if his relationship with his father turned out to be a problem he would be dismissed. I would not worry about it. Just make sure to list his father’s activities on the employment form, so it does not look like he is trying to hide anything.

It shouldn’t hurt him, because the application process and background investigation looks at the applicant – while taking the entire situation into account.
My suggestion would be to talk to the recruiters at various agencies – local, county, and state – to get their input. My thinking is that, as long as he’s honest about everything (including on the oral interview, psych screening, background investigation and polygraph), he shouldn’t have much to be concerned about.
Not everyone can be brought up in a 1950′s household (aka, Leave it to Beaver…) – especially these days.

its known that a kid who had a father who is a criminal, will always want to show for every one, that he is not like his father and he will be just the opposite. and all ways try to do good. so i think that they will want him for the job more then anyone who does not know how bad it is to be a criminal.
there is a saying that ” no one is better for a job, more then the one who experience the good effects and the bad affects of the job.”

It won’t ruin his chances, but will make it a little harder. At our police service we do background checks on immediate family as well.
The fact that he has had little to no contact with the father is good and also the fact that you are law abiding and have sole custody will be in his favour.
He may have to emphasize to recruiters if asked that he does not condone his father’s lifestyle and that he does not nor does he intend on, having any future contact with him.
The best thing your son can do it to continue to stay out of trouble and to get involved in the community (ie. volunteer work) to prove his is committed to making his community a better place.
I worked in our human resources dept. for a bit and I was involved in hiring a guy who had a bad *ss brother who was wanted for several b&e’s. We hired him anyway because he was a exceptional person and he had no contact with his brother and had different friends. You can’t pick your relatives.

With our agency it wouldnt be a problem. The persons background and the opinion of friends and family are what counts. They look at school history, credit history, criminal history, and driving history. The references must be good and he needs to be an upstanding citizen. He can further his chances by attending college and majoring in something like sociology or psychology (criminal justice is more tuned for lawyers) even if he only gets an Associates degree. He can intern with a police agency while attending university and get to know the troopers. Volunteer to help out at the office and do ride alongs if they are allowed. Tell him not to worry about his father and concentrate on himself and his career goals.

As a PD recruiter and background investigator, I know for our agency, it would make little difference. As has already been stated, if your son stays away from his father and has kept himself straight, it should be fine. Some larger federal agencies may disqualify him because of this. Most local and state agencies won’t though.
I just passed a kid on his background whose father was in State Prison. He had no contact with him and had led an exemplary life himself.
Its all in your son’s character, the friends he hangs out with now, keeping his grades up, and staying out of trouble. By the way, the number one thing that messes applicants up these days is their credit. Young people get in over their heads and ruin their credit. Bad credit is always a disqualifier with us. -

I have an Idea. see what you think. Its summer contact a law enforcement officer maybe the one that helped you out the last time. Still have a card lying around. how old is boy. is he old enough to volunteer to work at the station thru the school system referral program. best why to get experience and letters of recommendation is thru volunteering. they have lots of things a young man can do and by the way, well talking about having a big brother/father figure in his life name me one 1 better than a bunch of law enforcement officers. luck

i wouldnt worry i would tell him not to screw up and do good in school and take college classes in law enforcement and he should do fine i have family that are major screw ups and its hasnt affected me i just stay away from them

I dont think that this will be a problem for your son, however, I would make sure that he stays out of trouble himself. Most agencies will look at all members of the immediate family as well, however, they may not complete a background on them, just run them through their own system. I know when I had to fill out my background paperwork, it asked for all that information on my family members also. My biological father had been accused of a serious crime, but because I had no contact with him for several years, it didn’t affect my hiring at all. Just remember to tell your son, it is not just all criminal background they look at. They are going to want to know that he has done well in school (college as well as high school) and credit history along with the criminal background checks. I had to release all my banking information also. I didn’t ask, but since I had to allow them to look at my withdrawls and deposits, I guess it is to see if I had been making any deposits not backed by check stubs???

Family does count, but if the contact with his father is minimal or none at all then it will have far less influences on the hiring process.

As a retired officer and background investigator I would not have issue with your son as a candidate as I would base it on His Conduct alone and not any relative.
The fact that his father had issues would be an area I would scrutinize in depth, yet, if what you say is true, then there would be nothing disqualifying to find there.
I have known persons to be hired with actual criminal history of a minor nature that they were involved in.
What a background investigator looks for is Honesty and integrity; in the event your son so much as lies on his application, he would be history for me as I would cease the investigation and not waist my time on someojne who was dishonest as that and law-enforcement do not mix.
It sounds like your son has a good a chance as anyone; if he wants to increase his chances of getting hired I Strongly recommend he join the Navy or other branch of the military to learn discipline and responsibility. Few Police Officers have military experience and overall they are ok, yet, ones with this background make for better cops in my opinion.

yes it will play a role in the department making their decision.they will indeed ask you about iy. you will have to be very honest because they will already know the answers.if they believe you it will not be held against you
