So, today on Oprah…..(about moms).?

Ok, today on Oprah they were discussing the “truth” about motherhood. I’m the first to admit that I am no June Cleaver. Sure I’ve stayed up at night crying my eyes out along with my son (when he was an infant) at 5 a.m. b/c he was still awake. We all have our moments. However, I’m somewhat appalled at some of these mother’s confessions. One being that she peed in one of her kids diapers b/c she didn’t want to get the kids out of the car to go into a restroom. Another being they didn’t shower for several days. Come on….aren’t mother’s a little more than nasty, smelly slobs??? Sure, we all may heat up a TV dinner from time to time and call it a meal, but lets get real, mom’s deserve more credit than this. The whole show was filled with story after story that made moms seem a step lower than partying frat guys who have been on a three day drinking binge. So, what do you think?
I guess I should add that the whole thing was presented in a comedic light, that just bugs me that we don’t have higher standards than this and that people actually admit to it. I’m sorry, I just don’t find it funny, it’s just sad. I know that us mom’s can never have enough time or hands, but come on.

Tyra and Oprah’s purpose is to exploit the unrealities of different groups of people. Just watch the episodes when they give stuff away

they just need to manage their time a little better. I had 2 in diapers(cloth diapers at that), I breastfed and made my own baby food when it was time. I still shopped, I still took them places, I still showered everyday….

I agree with Oprah. Not all, but most moms I’ve seen working as a cashier are messy, unorganized, and extremely rude and snappy. One even threw a spit covered toy her sick baby had been drooling on all day and then got mad when I put hand sanitizer on my hands.

it just shows you, that yes, there is another side to that coin. not everyone has the standards you or i do. you see the mothers having more babies because they will get more welfare money….

I didn’t see it, but it doesn’t sound good. Why would women with children act out such poor behavior, and why would they go on a talk show and let the world know?

i think Oprah needs to shut her mouth when it comes to shows about motherhood! if your not a mother and have not had to get up every 3 hrs to feed the baby or if you have a colic baby, having to deal with the baby crying non-stop for 3-5 hrs and you cant do anything about it and try so hard not to hit your head with a frying pan to knock you out so you have 10 mins of quite.

IM sick of her doing shows she knows nothing about. i CANT stand her…

im a mom that had a 1 1/2 year old in diapers when my 10week preemie came home from the hospital and cried for 6 hrs straight for no reason and i still got the dishes done, made dinner, kept the house clean, showered everyday, did grocery shopping and f-ed my husband 4 times a week.

i hate how she like to make people look like they are dirty or gross just because they don’t have help 24/7 like she does!!

I saw that also and was a little shocked. But I guess it varies from parent to parent. Let’s say you have only a six month old and a husband whose home often, it would be a little easier for you to get a shower, shave your legs and do your hair, than it would with 4 children ages, 2 months, 2 years, 4 and 6. Right?
Or easier to drag your one child into the bathroom at walmart then if you had 5. I thought so of it was just shocking but thats the way I thought about it. Every mom has a different situation. Some are single with no many children and some have full-time husbands.

That’s bad !! Not all mothers are like that and i know im not i would never do things like that my kids shower everyday and i would never pee in a nappy. Sure my kids might have breakfast food for dinner every once in a while but there still getting fed good healthy food. Im not a slob and would never do those things. My kids deserve better. Mums are great they are the reason why we are here to begin with we are not all nasty pieces of work.

i also agree with you, yes, us mom don’t get to much time to our self. but enough to brush and take showers at least. moms who are like this is because while there kids are napping, they’re doing nothing… when my kids nap, i do everything (shower, comb hair) etc…

I think there is a lot more truth in what was shown, than anyone has the balls to admit too. Look around at society…wheres the discussion in that? Things are screwed up in parenting today…and most all of what was on Oprah is fact for at least 50% or more of people.

Other than live on three or four hours sleep from about Spring, 1981 until Winter, 1988; and, of course, offer the occasional Happy Meal with milk as a meal; I didn’t do anything strange or awful. When my six-week old infant was hospitalized, I did go without sleep for about 45 hours – but, again, doing without sleep seems to have been the only “different” thing I did when my kids were little. Oh – one other thing I did do was to spend a little extra time behind the bathroom door, reading – just because I was blessed with such active, chatty, little folks I did need to steal the occasional moment alone.

Oprah wouldn’t have wanted me on her show. I was happy, pretty much in control of things, and absolutely thrilled to be with my precious little folks (even if I did need to steal a half hour behind the bathroom door when their father was home).

I suspect a whole lot of other mothers are/were probably like I was.

As i am in australia – i probably haven’t got that episode yet.
But seriously, how can you not shower for several days??
I mean i am unorganised BUT not so that i cannot manage my time to make sure my baby is clean, house is tidy, laundray done and i am showered etc – i thought that was just day to day goings on.

i didn’t watch the show b/c i took my kids to the park, but i read it on oprah.com later.

the whole point of the show was to show women that it’s ok if we’re not perfect all the time. mothers have such high standards of themselves already and feel like failures if they can’t do something. and then you go and say that “it bugs me that we don’t have higher standards”.

good for you if you can look nice all the time, but i simply don’t have time to take a shower everyday, and i actually prefer to lounge around in my pj pants and husbands t-shirt while at home.

i actually quite liked the topic and message of the show and i’m appalled at ppl like you who put other moms down for talking about their faults.

I’m really surprised at all of these answers. I was grateful for the show and found it so truthful and HILARIOUS! And the HIGHLIGHT of it was the story of the mom who didn’t want to wake up her sleeping children on a 7-hr drive and decided to just pee in a diaper. I would totally do this. Nothing is better than kids sleeping on a long road trip. NOTHING. I traveled 24-hrs of driving (36-hrs total) last month and have to do it again next month, and since my husband won’t be with me this time I will definitely be keeping this open as an option if my kids are sleeping when nature calls.

Surely the mom who only showered a couple days a week was a stay at home, and when you’re overwhelmed and don’t see anyone but your own kids for days I say, “what’s the point in getting all pretty”… I have been known to go up to 3 days without showering from time to time. Yes I am my own victim of putting the kids before everything else and we as moms should at least take the time for themselves to shower up and feel fresh, but come on… let’s be honest… you aren’t f’n perfect all the time and all of you that say you are missed one of the biggest points on the show – stop the front and be honest with each other as mothers and support each other instead of competing.

I think the show explained exactly how hard motherhood can be at times better than I’ve ever heard before. All you ever hear is, “Being a Mom is the toughest job in the world”… but WHY?,… the show explained it to a “T” I do believe.

So for all of you still putting on that facade that you’re all keeping it together and checking off every item on your list every day – get real.
