Should you air your parents dirty laundry to make yourself look good?

My mom called me yesterday and told me that my uncle is furious with his son (my cousin) because he told a local paper that his father did crack cocaine when he was younger and that his brother sold drugs. Apparently it truly happened years ago… he is 37 now.

He was featured in an article about graduating from college later in life… so overall it’s a good story.. our family is furious now that he told the reporter his father did crack and and his brother sold drugs.

Would you air your parents dirty laundry to make yourself look good? Should my family be ticked off enough to not attend his graduation or graduation party?
Now that his father has changed his life and has a good job and new friends he is afraid of losing them along with custody of his young daughter

I know my family would. There is an honor in keeping family secrets in the family. Spilling your guts to a friend is one thing, but to tell a report so your whole town know is harsh. He should apologize to his family for his dishonor. I’m sure he didn’t feel like it was a bad thing when he was telling the reporter, but it is obviously something your family is embarrassed of.

If someone is willing to break the law they have to be willing to take the consequences. The uncle needs to stand up and be a man and take his lumps. Obviously it impacted your cousin because he reported it. He shouldn’t be made to suffer because others did wrong.

Congratulate him on his accomplishment and show up at the graduation. Just be glad he didn’t end up where the rest of the family was going. And your family should ask themselves why they didn’t step in to protect him. My own aunts and grandparents stood back while my sister and I grew up and closed a blind eye to the problems. Fortunately we were strong enough to get by like your cousin.

Spreading negative gossip or past mistakes about anyone is never good. Hurting family, in my book, is worse.
