That’s a very difficult question. It depends partially on the age of the son. I think that the son and the father need to sit down and discuss this question. It is probably very important to the son to have his father around and not see him die and the father might not understand that. There might be an important reasoning of the father that the son doesn’t see. The best way to solve this is to have the father and son sit down to figure out the best course of action for both of them.

If the son loves the father unconditionally then he should give his father a second chance but make sure his father understands that he is banned to touch booze ever again in this lifetime. If his father doesn’t change even then the son would never feel guilty because he did try to save his father.

You can try but be prepared for the outcome. At least you wont regret that you didn’t help your father?

Take a second opinion from a Surgeon/Doctor. This is something very serious and not something that can be answered in Yahoo Answer board.

Think about this:
You have a Chance to save a love one but you say no.
2 months later, he dies. How bad would you feel?

OR

You give him half your liver.
You saved his life by making him live longer and you can bond more,

I commend you for wanting to help your father in this very grave period of his life. This is what it means to be your brother’s keeper even though he is your father. It is very easy now to fault your father for his alcoholism and subsequent destruction of his liver which is leading to his death. However,alcoholism is a disease which many people are fighting with and struggling to overcome;some succeed ,others do not not .For those who do ,it remains a lifelong struggle .The reality is that your father is a very poor candidate for inclusion on the transplant list and also as a receipient for a liver for the very reason that he is an alcoholic .Unless he can show that he would not destroy the new liver by drinking again(wasting it),his chances are slim to none. I would suggest the following for you to consider and discuss with your father: 1) Tell him that you love him and as such can not just fold your hands and watch him die even if he felt it was due to his own mistakes. 2) Tell him that you are sure that he will live his life in a different manner with a second chance at life and would not make the same choices .Plus he can educate people about the consequences of indiscriminate drinking after his recovery . 3) Let him know that the surgery is routine these days, that the doctors would only need a little piece of your liver (maybe a lobe or less) ,and that both your liver and the donor liver would regenerate. The risk you face as the donor would be limited to the risk associated with any surgical procedure. Unless he still intends to continue drinking and has no intention to cease if he gets a second chance at life,I see no reason why he would still refuse your very kind offer to save him. You are a shinning example of a good son as well as a good person . I wish you both well and a speedy recovery from the surgery (which is usually referred to as living liver donor).
