My son is weak of will. I’m afraid that when he goes out of rehab, he’s going to start drinking again. He’s really smart and talented, and has a life ahead of him, and I don’t want him to ruin his future just by drinking. He promised me he’s going to change, but when he goes out of rehab, the temptations will surely get back into his life. I can’t be with him 24/7, but I want so much to protect him. What can I do?

You have to be there for him every step of the way. It’s true that you can’t be with him 24/7, but you also said that your son is smart. Give him the benefit of the doubt. Trust in him. Foster a deeper relationship with him. Have him talk to you about his problems and what’s bothering him. A lot of teens seek comfort and companionship in alcohol. If you can be his friend and confidante as well as his parent, he won’t have to turn to alcohol. Encourage him to find a group of friends that are all sober, so temptations will be lessened.

Constant communication, love, and support. I can understand your fears of relapse, but only time can tell. If he has gone so far as to promise change, then you can help uphold him to his word. Stay positive (don’t nag or worry too much — it’ll only stress him out), and help him make new lifestyle choices so he won’t be tempted by past demons.
I know he must be sick of support groups like AA, but sometimes it really does help to have an outlet. Try this new venue: http://www.dailystrength.org
It’s a great place for him to journal his thoughts and progress, and receive support from the thousands of online members who are going through all different kinds of health and life circumstances. I think he’ll find it handy.

First you have to accept that you can’t ensure anything as long as your son is over the age of 10. It’s a decision that he has to make. It has to be something that he wants for himself and not for you. I lived with an achololic for eight years before we separated because he couldn’t decided that his family was more important than the alchol. You need to go to meetings for families of alcoholics as much as he needs to go to AA. Your constantly telling him to go to AA or any other things to keep sober will only make him think that you’re nagging him. The other issue is that alcoholism isn’t a matter of a weak will it’s a disease and if you don’t treat it as such you’ll oly be setting both of you up for failure. You can’t control anyone but YOU. I know that you don’t want your son to throw away his life as you see it, but that’s not a choice you can make for him. The most that you can do is to tell him that you love him and that you’ll support his quest for soberity and than let him deal with it himself. Before he comes home get a list of AA meetings for everyday of the week and at different times of the day so that he has a lot of options and than it’s up to him. I’ll say a pray for him. But remember you need to get help for yourself also, so that you can learn to live with an alcholic.
