My son has expressive language disorder, does this ever get better?

He is 5 yrs old. I adopted him. He was drug exposed. (meth) although normal weight and term. He seems to not be getting better although he is in speech therapy and a small vlass size. Problems with short term memory, two-step directions, blanking out spells, talks like a two year old.

Could be a simple case of regression……then again its difficult to say without seeing the child.Best guess prognosis is that he will improve over time but no certainties here!!

First, what a sweet person you are for adopting a child in the first place. Second, I’m not a specialist but I believe in positive reinforcement. Is he in school?? These early years are extremely important to consistent quiz him and find ways to keep his attention. I recommend…
1. Getting him assessed (speech therapy) which he already is.
2. tutoring
3. Assessed for ADD (blanking out spells)
4. Parenting classes.

Note: UCLA is having studies on addiction with Meth etc. Maybe try contacting the doctors there in terms of their advice.

Yes, with a lot of social experiences and with adults as well and other kids talking with him at every opportunity, you can expect his language skills to grow and expand. Speech therapy alone will not “cure” him, but it can be a good place to keep an eye on his progress and to learn what you can be doing at home. Be sure to keep talking to him more like a 5 yr old than a 2 yr old, and he will probably begin to sound more like a 5 yr old. Enjoy your time with him, and he will respond well.
