First i’d suggest a family intervention, and if that doesn’t work, try to check him into a rehabilitation center. He needs to be reminded what drugs could do to him and that people care about him. He needs to realize that for him to act as he is is selfish, and immature. If he dies of a drug addiction it will not only mean he’s gone, but he’ll also leave the family with more unnecessary pain. If he is in denial and won’t admit to his faults, the family should take force. I’m sure he will hate you for it now, but chances are if he cleans it out of his system, rethinks where his life was going, he’ll be thankful for it. But right now, he’s heading nowhere, and nothings stopping him or changing his mind. He needs something to stop him or at least get him to take notice.

Addiction is an illness passed from one generation to the next. It causes great emotional and physical pain when left untreated. Your nephew needs to be treated for his illness. He may or may not be ready to get help. This is the hardest thing for friends and families of addicts to understand. I had to be locked up nearly a dozen times before I could admit I had a problem. I went through long term treatment and have been clean for 6.5 years now. It has been very hard work. Most addicts end up dead or in prison. This is the sad truth of this devastating illness. If you are having a hard time dealing with or knowing how to truly help your nephew, I would suggest talking to people who have dealt with the same thing. Meetings such as al-anon or narc-anon are in nearly every city nationwide. Its hard to know what to do, so try not to do it alone. Your nephew will follow his own path regardless. Take care of yourself in the process.
