My heart breaks “cocaine “?

My son is 22 living in another state he has been coming home at least once a month and he keeps a cold I was giving him medicine and to find he has been snorting cocaine for 4 months !He said he will stop he just did it because friend does it and it helps to loose weight so any advise my heart aches .
He has told me he only used at night with friends after work ,he says he has not used in 2 weeks .He don’t think he needs rehab to stop !!As far as telling my son he can’t stay here there is other ways for tough love than putting someone out on the street to run back to the drug from depression .Thanks for all the answers at this point

From what I hear if he has been doing it for 4 months he will need professional help to get off it.

I work on a cardiac floor in a hospital and I can’t tell you how many young people have come in with chest pain due to cocaine use and how much damage they have done to there heart. I have seen a 40 something man whose heart was so bad that he wasn’t expected to leave the hospital alive all because of cocaine.

Set up an intervention and get him into a rehab. Tell him to join a gym, and start a healthy diet if he wants to lose weight. I’m sorry to tell you this, but he will never get the help he needs until he’s more honest with himself about his problem. Don’t give him any money, and don’t let him stay in your house. Yes he is your son, and you want to help him, but there is always room for tough love. Other wise you might as well hold the straw while he takes his next hit.

the bad news is, if he has been doing it for that long, he is addicted and will not be able to stop without help. There are exceptions to that, but very rare.

The other bad news is his heart will be damaged greatly if he continues. Cocaine is highly addictive. (as well as the other drugs out there)

You don’t indicate how much of the drug he is using. There is a differnce between someone using it on weekends and all day every day.

To quit someone has to want to stop using a drug. If it really is a problem and they can’t see it you can attempt to get them to see that they are in trouble.

Statistically rehabilitation clinics are no more successful than people quitting on their own. 95% of people relapse regardless of the method used or the drug involved.

It all depends on how much your son is taking in. I’ve been doing cocaine for about 4 years now. I only do it on a big night out. Twice a month. I am not addicted. Nor do i crave cocaine or have that “i need it” feeling. I can stop today and it wont bother me

IF your son is coming to you, begging for money, or stealing or something then yea…he’s in a wee bit of trouble. the day it affects everyone around him, he’s in trouble. but its only been 4 months! unless he does it every night, then he’s fine.

ask him how much he does. how much he takes.

then go from there.

I was pretty addicted to cocaine…using every day all day for a few months and one day I just up and quit cold turkey. So your son might not need to go to rehab to stop. It’s probably the people he is around that he feels pressured to do it.
