My half-sister died, but do i have the right to be as sad as everyone else?

My half sister was 20 yrs older than me but she was still always there. she was a drug addict then committed suicide. at the funeral i didnt even cry because my half brothers girlfriend said he should be sadder because he knew her for 40 years and i only knew her for 18. i loved her and wished i had done something to help her. do i have a right to be sad or should my grief take the backseat to my parents, brothers and nephews?

You absolutely have a right to feel sad….she was someone special in your life. Regardless of the fact that she was only your “half sister” she still meant a lot to you and honestly, whether you knew her for 18 minutes, or 18 years…everyone touches our lives in their own special way. You are ALWAYS entitled to feel any certain way! I am sorry for your loss!

You be a sad as your body tells you that you should be! Your half brothers girlfriend does not know what she is talking about. I have a half sister that I am very close to. She is 11 years older than I am. I would in no way think that my other half sister or my half brother would be more or less upset. That is like saying my husband would not be as upset as my blood family if I were to go. Don’t listen to her, seriously you have every right to morn in your own way!

Yes, you have the right to feel what ever it is your feeling..it doesn’t matter how long you known someone, it could be only for a year..If they made a major impact on your life and you grew to love them, it’s going to hurt regardless and 18 years is a really long time to know someone.Maybe you didn’t cry because some people take death differently, some cry and some don’t and sometimes later on when everything sets in and when you realize the person is really gone for good, you’ll begin to cry.But you have every right to be sad as everyone else,it doesn’t matter how long you knew her.God bless

The thing about grief it that IT IS YOURS, no one can tell you how to feel. You have the right to be as sad as you want. You knew her for 18 years, she was your sister…grieve

You have every right to feel sad. she was your sister , ur blood. Dont go by what others say maybe they didn’t know your true feelings about her. So its okay you knew her for 18 years that’s a long time.

Your half brothers girlfriend does not get to dictate everyones feelings to them. She sounds like an idiot. You have a right to feel how you feel. My advice however is to choose carefully who you talk to about how you feel. She obviously is not a friend.
