my friend has a 22 year old daughter, the mother at times has been finding alcohol bottles in her purse . when she confronts her daughter she says i don’t drink to the point it’s a problem and i don’t have a problem i told her to get her some help she has a 4 month old son but the mother cares for him. she says her daughter takes very good care of her son also.she has never seen her drunk and for her not finding the bottles she wouldn’t have known. she does not deny that it is her alcohol.is their such a thing as a functioning ????????? what should she do.

she is 22 and is aloud to drink legally. and if shes a good parent and not an alcholic whats the problem? she doesnt need help for a problem she doesn’t even have eh?

Sometimes other family members or friends can help assist in getting someone help for a substance abuse problem…but other times a person can be resistant to help. And when there’s resistance to getting help, then the only person you can help is yourself. There is a specific organization for family and friends of substance abusers. It’s called Al-Anon…the sister program of AA. The alcoholic has their problems, but the codependent has their own problems also which is not always apparent to him/her because the focus is on the alcoholic. Suggest Al-Anon to your friend’s mother. When she attends meetings she’ll learn about the family disease of alcoholism.

Why is the mother going thru her daughter’s purse “at times” in the first place? Maybe the daughter shares those little bottles with friends instead of paying $6.50 a drink in the club.
If the baby’s mother is from an alcoholic family, there is probably cause to be concerned. Kids born to alcoholic parents have over 90% higher chance of becoming or marrying an alcoholic than other kids.
Yes, there are millions of functioning alcoholics. Many function for decades and some for a lifetime. But women are especially susceptable to the tolerance and progression factors of alcoholism, which is that they have to drink more and more to feel normal, and the sickness progresses every single day whether we drink or not. Women seem to go through it earlier and quicker than men.
