My father has cancer and I told him to hurry up and die?

We were arguing about my drinking. He said I could drink all I want but hes not paying for his son to become an alcoholic. I’m not an alcoholic. I don’t drink on Mondays or Tuesdays. Besides, I clearly remember him saying to me that if I went to college he would pay for everything I needed so I wouldn’t need a job. (I did have a job working for him but he fired me).

Okay he pays for my apartment, car and other expenses, but he never told me alcohol money would be excluded from the deal. When he said he wouldn’t pay I was irritated because I had a great weekend planned. I told him I hated him and couldn’t wait for him to die because I’d get all his money.

He looked really upset but you must understand the cancer isn’t terminal. I feel hes being a little pathetic since hes unlikely to die. He refuses to speak to me now. Why is he acting so angry and hateful towards me?

First of all, if the only days you do not drink are Mondays and Tuesdays, you are pretty much an alcoholic. And of course your dad is upset with you, YOU TOLD HIM TO GO DIE! That will make anybody upset, especially a family member! Shame on you!

Your father is right in not supporting your addiction. If you want alcohol money earn it yourself. You sound like you have a problem with alcohol. If you aren’t an alcoholic then have a party that won’t include alcohol. If you can’t go an entire week without having a drink then you do have a problem and you are the one who needs help. I feel for your father for getting an ungrateful, insensitive son like you. After what you told him he should just cut you off completely and let you take care of yourself.

Well it sounds like you are quite the douche bag. My parents make almost 200k a year and didnt save up any money for me to go to college and are now in debt so cant provide me any money at all for college let alone for room and board, car and alcohol. It seems like you need to suck it up, apoligize, and be more grateful. Hes angry at you because you said you would rather him die than you having a fun weekend. Get a job, buy your own damn alcohol and stop expecting your parents to carry you through life. This world could use less of people like you.

If you’re not an alcoholic and you’re not so seriously irresponsible with alcohol that your dad might have reason to suspect you are then it was out of line to say he’s not paying for you to become an alcoholic. In either case a more diplomatic approach would’ve been for him to just say that since alcohol is not a necessity that if you want it you have to find a way to pay for it yourself. I personally don’t know anyone whose parents buy them alcohol unless it’s a special occassion(birthdays, christmas, weddings, graduation).

-You sound spoiled. He’s paying for all this other stuff and you’re upset he won’t buy you alcohol. But then this might not even be about alcohol. People use things as proxies in arguments to hide what’s really upsetting them all the time. I don’t know your personal history with your father. Sometimes financially supportive parents are still emotional neglectful or even emotionally and sometimes physically abusive. Search into your childhood and see if maybe this is not about the alcohol. There might be some past issues to resolve.

-BUT it was even more out of line to say you couldn’t wait for him to die. Dying from cancer even if it’s not terminal is NOT something to joke about especially since nonterminal cancer sometimes becomes terminal. What if it does? What if he dies? How will you feel for saying that?

I’d apologize for saying that, and tell him you didn’t mean it. If there’s any unresolved issues, if it wasn’t actually about the alcohol I’d let him know that too but not in an accusatory way.

Your father probably doesn’t want to give you money for alcohol because he cares about you. Besides, if you can’t afford to buy your own alcohol, then you shouldn’t be drinking. Him paying for your apartment and car should give you no reason to complain about the lack of drinking money. Most people have to pay for those things themselves. What you said to your dad was mean, awful, and almost unforgivable. He obviously loves and cares about you. If he continues to refuse to talk to you, send him a letter telling him that you’re sorry, and that you love him. You really hurt him. My father actually died from cancer. You’re lucky that his form isn’t terminal so that you will have the chance to patch up your relationship, and spend as much time as you can with him while he is still here. Please try to fix this, you will be so glad when you do. As far as your weekend, you can party just as hard without the alcohol, (and probably remember it better!) Hope this helps!

If I were him I would would be PO’ed if I was paying for my son’s partying You should be really glad you have a father who will pay your college tuition! And car, and housing!!! I think you are really taking him for granted.
You really owe him an apology. He is allowed to tell you what you can and can’t use his money for, not the other way around.
You should make it up to him.
And dont be so confident about his cancer not being terminal. My grandmother fought cancer for 20 long years and one day in 2009 she got a call that it had spread to her blood and that she should enjoy her last few months on this earth. A few weeks later it hit her brain. I never got to tell her how much I loved her before she was too sick to even recognize who her own grandson was, who she was willing to run to hell and back for if it made me happy! I never want anyone to have to feel the same guilt I do for taking such a wonderful person for granted. I have never met anyone that cares about others the way she did.
Please apologize to your dad because someday you will be begging to no avail for one more moment with him. Just please, no matter what it takes, settle this useless argument.

Guilt makes ppl act angry to cover up their pain!
I don’t know all the details of your early life but I can tell from what you write that there are serious problems between you and whoever brought you up (parents?) and this is why you are showing such disrespect towards your parents (although you don’t mention your mother).
Since you haven’t asked what to do about this, I can only assume that you are satisfied with the situation and/or already have a solution if there even is a problem there.

He’s paying for everything you NEED. Needs are food (not alcohol), shelter, books, and apparently transportation. And even transportation and an apartment instead of a dorm are things he doesn’t HAVE to pay for either. He’s doing that so you won’t have to get a job. That’s probably because he knows that there’s no way you’ll be able to take care of yourself if you have to get a job when you got fired from your last job where your DAD was your BOSS.

You think he’s mad now, wait until you find out he’s cut you out of his will, which is exactly what I would’ve done right after that comment.
