My 5 month olds formula is costing way too much!

My son is 5 months old and he is 18 pounds… hes not fat.. just solid.

He eats like 44 ounces of formula per day which is ALOT. and im not rich… he is going through it like water.. every like 3 or 4 days which is pathetic!!!! I feed him rice cereal for breakfast and 1st stage foods at 9.
Im just wondering when i should feed him to get him off this INSANE formula binge!!!

You could try some more cereal in the evening. I don’t know if you qualify, but WIC could be an option to look into.

To answer your question about WIC, it stands for Women Infants and Children. It basically provides some free foods for pregnant women and children, and free formula for babies. I’m not sure if they have a similar program in Canada or not, as I live in the U.S. I’m sure if you did some research online or with your local health department, you’d be able to find out.

44 ounces is a lot, but if that’s what he needs, it’s not too much.

I sympathise that it’s expensive, but, unfortunately, when we have kids we sign up to buy them the stuff they need — whatever it costs.

If it’s really beyond your budget, see if you are eligible for WIC, or check the formula companies website for coupons/freebies.

EDIT: WIC is a U.S. government program that provides food for low-income pregnant women, and either formula (for FF babies) or healthy foods for mom (if they are breastfeeding) after baby arrives. I don’t know if Canada has anything comparable, but you might ask your doctor.

I would not increase his solids. At 5 months even once a day is rather a lot for solids. 44 ounces of formula (though costly) isn’t too much, and better to give him healthy foods that he needs, rather than filling him up on more solid foods that have fewer nutrients. He’s NOT overweight, (he’s about the 60th percentile) so he’s obviously getting the amount of food that HIS body needs. If you replace formula with lower calorie babyfood, he may not get enough.

try keeping him on a schedule with the formula and instead of always giving him the formula try giving him diluted juice or even water, if you know hes not hungry then make him wait until it is time for the next formula bottle. have you applied for wic, that could help with the formula. and also you can look on ebay for it to, thats how we used to do it and never had a problem. is he eating because hes bored and is he asleep in between feedings cause he could associate awake with being hungry.

i recently switched to a generic formula, most of them are made by the same manufacturers as the pricey ones. walmarts generic is made by similac. if you have a bj’s wholesale or costco by you they have the cheapest generics. i just switched to the bjs brand from good start. the good start can is half the size of the bjs but cost $10 more!

LOL- my son just turned 4 months and he weighs 18 lbs. His pediatrician told me to feed him no more than 35 oz a day and fill the rest in with solids. I am not sure how much for a 5 month old, though. These recommendations were not because of his weight, she said he was fine..

And kids get more and more expensive as they get older!!!! More formula, healthy food prices, less diapers for more money, real milk is $4 a gallon, pre-school, sports fees…Have fun…

have you tried getting on wic cause then you can get his formula and rice cereal from them. my son is 5 months to and he is on a special formula that costs 30 dollars for a 16oz can he doc gave my a prescription and i took it to the office and i get 8 cans a month hope this helps

wic is a program here in the states to help out pregnant women and women that have kids up to age 5 they give you things like milk and cheese beans cereal eggs or peanut butter and than baby formula cereal and juice for both it is a great program maybe Canada has some thing similar

This is a samply menu for 5-6 month olds:
Breakfast: Infant oat cereal 4 tbsp.
Stage 1 peach 2 tbsp.
Lunch: stage 1 peas 4 tbsp.
Dinner: Infant rice cereal 4 tbsp.
Stage 1 squash 2 tbsp.

To reduce the cost of formula, if you are qualify for WIC, that’s be great. If not, try to look for formula at affordable prices on local Craigslist.

he sounds hungry, id give him more solids, my little girl was on 3 solid meals a day by 5 months cos she was so hungry. (though shes only just 21 pounds at 9 months lol) save money, make ur own baby food aswell, its sooo easy and will save u loads of money and is better 4 him aswell. go on your intuition, trust urself as a mother and do what u think is best. i was told to do what i thought my baby needed, if hes ready for more food thn give him it, just make sure he still has formular, and tht the food u give him is healthy

My twins were consuming that much per day for several months, which means that I was feeding them 80 oz per day combined.

I wouldn’t push solids just to save money. It’s not the healthiest thing for him. The healthiest thing for him right now is to drink as much formula as he wants. That’s where the nutrition is. That is what his brain needs to grow. Not solids.

If cost is a concern, and believe me, it was a concern for me as well, buy a generic brand of formula. That will take the edge of your pocket book.

If it were me, I’d be eating ramen noodles 3 meals a day if it meant that my twins could get the best nutrition possible.

I would give him cereal twice a day. Are you starting with 1st fruits or vegetables? If it is fruit you can mix a little fruit into the cereal for variety. It sounds to me like he is hungry. My son was the same way and once he started solids it made a world of difference and now we are back in the recommended normal range for daily formula intake. If he has been on rice cereal for a while you could try oatmeal or mixed grain. They are a little thicker and more substantial and might stay with him longer. Good luck!

ok get a feeder bottle and put 1 jar of stage 2 baby food 2 scoops of formula and 2 scoops of rice cereal and a lil bit of water to make sure its not to think to go through the hole and that should work my son has been eating that since he was 1 month old
