His life is spiraling out of control. He does O.K. for awhile and then he relapses. He can’t focus on school, work, he gets very angry. He is going back to inpatient this week. Is there anything else that can help an alcoholic. I love him so much. It is like an aggressive cancer.

he has to help himself through this ,,, it hard , but all you can do is support him through it , as much as you love him ,alcoholic destroy people lives he has a hard road ahead of him at 18 ,,just be there for him goood luck

Do not have a drink around him and offer your support no matter what. Alcoholism is a dangerous addiction but with support it can be beat.
Has he been to a psychologist or just the addiction counselors? Sometimes a psychologist might be able to get in a little deeper and try to find the root cause of his addiction.
You could also try a different center. If the first one cause him to relapse after a while, sometimes it could be the center. Maybe find one that offers outpatient services for when he graduates from inpatient services and he should go a couple times a week to counseling or to the center for help even if he doesn’t feel the need for a drink.

does he still live with you? if he does then tell him they’ll be no more alcohol in the house and if he breaks the rules he will be kicked out or some other punishment. he will probably say, you cant control me im 18 but if he is living with you you have to make the rules of the house.

i think live-in treatment is good, maybe you can try to keep him there for longer. sometimes moving away from the situation that caused him to drink can be helpful because coming home sober to the same thing may cause relapse. good luck

One of the best things you can do for your son is to help yourself by going to Al-anon. They will help you learn how to not enable him, that way he can hit his true bottom and help himself.
When some of us are rescued time and time again we start blaming others for our problems and not taking responsibility for ourselves.

Are you an alcoholic too? Do you blame mistakes on the fact that you’ve been drinking? Why don’t you and your family members stop drinking for awhile and maybe attend Al-Anon meetings. There they will tell how destructive it can be to be an enabler for your son and you’ll find that there are lots of people there who have the same problems you do. Good Luck.

Sounds like he is still struggling, perhaps being in denial? definitely has reservations.
I’ve been where he is at & it took looking at a 5 year stretch in prison to get me serious about not drinking & using. I had bombed out of college because i couldn’t keep myself together long enough to get through a semester.at age 17 i made my first 12 step meeting. By age 19, I entered my first & last recovery house. I have knowledge & tools to get through every situation without running & hiding under booze etc.but I remember what it was like being where your son is, he is adrift, sinking in quicksand and doesn’t even know it!
If he is not willing to change, it will take a spiritual bomb blast going off in his life to make him be willing.My brother was also like your son, an alcoholic by 13 years old,…he died at age 37 because he never could surrender completely—the chemicals won!
No matter what-don’t stop loving your son. Don’t enable him either!

You have to let him hit rock bottom. When he wants his life back he is the only one who can get it back. All you can do it support him but don’t enable him! Good Luck.
