my son and i have a very good relationship. he has always been able to come to me and answer me honestly. i had just picked him up from his best friend after spending the weekend. we went out to dinner and he was acting silly. i asked him if he ever smoked weed before. he said he tried it for the first time friday at his friends house. then he asked me if he was in trouble. i asked him the who, what, where, why, and hows. i did not get crazy because it’s more important to me that he feels that he can come to me. i did print some information about teens and alcohol and drugs. i would like some other things i could talk about that is not so textbook. straight to the point and hopefully he would so no if there is a next time. please help.

I think you handled that very well. Maybe you could talk to him about real life stories of good people gone wrong and how dealers have special ways of getting their users hooked. I knew a guy who sprayed his weed with windex and then sold it. The windex made the high more powerful, and the mj more moist (moist = good). Thats how he hook his customers… however smoking windex is obviously not good for you…

It is great that you two have a great relationship and he was able to tell you about this.
The only thing you can do is talk to him about it, as text book as it may sound. I think everyone has experienced seeing someone go down the wrong path because they made the wrong decisions, tell him about what you’ve seen. Ask him why he decided to try it and how it made him feel. Ask him if he is planning on doing it again. Hopefully you two will continue to have such an open relationship and he will realize what can happen if he does those things on a regular basis.

it sounds like you have good relationship with your son, that he can be that honest at such a young age. It also sounds like you did everything right. These things happen, just make him aware that there are consquences to his actions if hes ever caught by the police. Also have him be aware to the fact that if he were to ever to get drunk before he’s 21 and he has to drive home, to make sure to call home to have you pick him up.

Well I think the fact you talked to him about it in the first place is a great start. I would explain to him the laws in your area about what will happen if gets into trouble if caught.
I would also keep in mind that he may be place in situations where there is pressure. I would explain to him your rules if he comes home drunk or high. Encourage him if he does end up in situations where he’s not able to get home safe to call you.
ALl you can do is keep talking to him, and encourage him to keep the lines open to you.

appreciate his honesty , what a excellent relationship to have with your son …most kids would lie or blame someone else , getting him any information on the dangers and risks associated with using drugs at his age is good talking openly with him about any of your experiences or friends experiences may help (don,t need to reveal all if any ) but talk to him openly ….you are so lucky to have a good son

First of all i would say that not a lot of mom’s would choose to act calm in a situation like this so props, its great that you have such a great bond between you and your son but what most parents dont realize is that at some point or age even if there is a strong bond between parent and child your child may still hide big things from you because a) they do not want to disappoint you b) they know the consequences and do not want to be affected c) it might be an outlet to another major problem that they have had before this one however since you the parent is pretty calm about the situation your son is probably thinking oh since she knows its okay to do it again. during the talk i would ask him why he chose to do so and how it felt to use it. you should tell him that “i know this sounds like a textbook and that you have heard this many times before but a lot of people have been addicted to this drug and you at such and adolescent and young age have so much for your future so much you could do you can be great” he might bow his head and say that he doesnt feel that he can really do anything to contribute for his future but you should reassure him that its okay to try these things as long as you know what the effects are and that you wont let it tempt you next time. you would say something like ” i can’t obviously pick your friends for you a lot of other parents have done it but that rule is just another temptation for that kid to be with those friends yes i cant pick your friends for you but i trust you and have faith in you that you will try your best to make the best choices for you , im not going to say that you arent going to make any mistakes that is obvious but in the long run i hope that this talk will be helpful to you in the long run. next time if you feel that you have a problem dont hesitate to talk to me i know that its embarrassing as your mother but its what we do wether you like it or not and believe me the choice is yours for you to decide . hope that this was helpful good luck

coming from a teenager who used to smoke weed a lot, you must be a very good parent. i know that if anyone had told me about how the most apparent effect of smoking was that it could distract me from the things that are REALLY important in life, i might have quit sooner. you obviously want the best for him, so just tell him that. if you make it a little more personal then “marijuana can give you cancer” he’ll see your side of it a lot clearer.

I am a 16 year old young girl and I see from your prospective. Thank goodness you did not go sycho on him. I wish I had parents like you that were understanding. I have to say I have never smoked a cigarette in my life have never even did drugs. I have drunk before but not to get drunk or anything. I would encourage him to talk to you about things he learned about doing this kind of thing. Ask him if he would ever do this kind of thing again after that and tell him you love him alot and you cherish him so much that you are looking out for his well being. But make sure you make some ground rules so he does not do it again. When you talk to him don’t use the word “you” in any of your sentences. That is most like you are attacking him. That is what I feel like when my dad says I can’t date and that I don’t need to find someone to love and to find a husband one day. So now I feel like I am in the suffication of having to sneek and do things without them knowing and that is the last thing I want. If you would email me! Cause I really need someone to talk to about this! But I will give you a little advise I have learned through my own parents rules don’t make too many of them to where I am now and don’t make too less of them so they feel it is ok because mom did not get upset at him for doing it.! That is tough, my parents were always “just say no!” from day one so i never saw it as a good thing or something i wanted to try.
Alcohol is a little alarming too…
I mean he is going to do what he is going to do regardless, he is a young man, you are still his mom and legal guardian but unless you just yank him up by his boot straps and don’t let him ever hang out with those friend and lock him in his closet till he is 18 or 21, the chances of him turning it down after he has already tried it are pretty low.
If you have a really great relationship with him I would suggest you just tell him how disappointed you are that he did that, explain to him that drugs and alcohol can greatly damage his body. Make sure he knows that you are glad he told you, but I would also let him know that if you ever find it in your house you will not hesitate to call the police.
I mean I donno what else to tell you. I am not a parent, I am a young adult who had to make the decisions to say no to those things not too long ago myself. I know for me when my dad told me he would be really disappointed if he ever found out i tried pott i knew i never wanted to try it, because the idea of disappointing him that way would be more traumatic to me than any punishment he could ever dish out.

thats pretty cool that you he is honest with you. tell him he will be funked for a long time if he gets busted with pot. at least wait until he has graduated high school and can do it responsibly. that is too young to be getting intoxicated with anything. he needs to join an athletic team or do something positive to fill his time. until he can get high responsibly and not misuse a great plant.
