My 14 year old son was caught drinking in school?

He has been waiting and working to get into the high school he is in. They only accept so many students each year and you have to earn the right to go there. My son is a good student and has never gotten into any trouble before. Saying this as his mother i am sure people will say that i am just in denial, but he really is a good kid and has a good head on his shoulders. Last week i received a call from the school that he was found drinking in shop class. Now he might be getting kicked out of the school he worked so hard to get into. He said it was the first time he has never done this before. i believe him, but i am concerned about it. alcoholism runs in my family and when i was his age i was already an alcoholic. Does anyone know if there is anything i can do to make sure he doesn’t go down that road. We always talk and he knows i am there for him whenever he needs me, but i know he is at the age when his friends have more influence on him than i do sometimes. i just want a better life for him then i had and i am hoping someone might have some ideas to help prevent this.

Don’t let him go out all of the time, try to keep an eye on him.

I hope he doesn’t get kicked out of that school, I know how hard it is to get into some schools and he must have felt really good when he was accepted. All kids make mistakes, and he’s not the only kid to ever drink in school. They should just take that into consideration, and not let him go to the bathroom alone, or have someone with him when he’s in the hallways rather than just kicking him out.

first, ground him.
second, take him to a detox center or a rehab center and SHOW him what alcoholism can do to people. Showing works better than telling.

I believe that he is a good child. .many good children tend to make wrong choices and start to go down the wrong path but I think it is great that you are catching it so early and hopefully you will be able to prevent it from getting out of control… I would suggest you discuss with him the possible consequences if he continues drinking and making these choices at such a young age.. first off he might get kicked out of his good school because of his bad choice. You need to make him realize that drinking at the age of 14 is not only going to affect his health but affect his future as a citizen.. you might even be able to provide your own experiences to show how it has affected you.. yeah you need to grasp him real quick-i am sure you have a good kid but kids do make mistakes, just make him learn from his mistake. show him what alchohlism does, teach and instruct. also teach your son to lead and to not follow

Well you sound like a great mom to me, lots of kids end up going down that road because their parents could care less what they do. Honestly all you can really do is be the best parent you can be, and be an example for him. At that age you really don’t have much control over what he does, it’s the age where they start making decisions on their own.

I’m sixteen years old and alcoholism runs a bit in my family too, something my dad always does for me is; just before i leave anywhere, when i go to say goodbye he will tell me three things: Be safe, watch out for others around you, and use good judgment. That that always seems to show me that he cares what i’m doing, and does the very best he can as a parent to keep me clean and going forward. I would just suggest you do the same.

I know it’s hard to think your child can do something wrong, but if he does it once, he’ll do it again. It is essential that you handle him in a parental fashion and not in a friend-like manner. Instill in him the knowledge of what alcohol does and what it leads to. Do NOT let him know you were an alcoholic by his age because that will give him the attitude of “oh… they did it so I can do it too…”

You have to get him to understand how bad alcohol is and what the punishment will be if he so much as goes near another bottle of whatever he had. Remind him of the hard work he had to go through to get to the point he’s at and how one single slip-up can throw every single moment of that away.
