my sister needed someone to watch her 4 yr old daughter while she’s working. my other sister droped her off while i was still sleeping. she made a mess, cut up newspapers and i made her clean it up. i gave her food then i told her when she is full she had to clean the rest. she didn’t. so i made her sit in the corner and look there. she can’t turn her head or make any noises. she’s been sitting there for like 30 mins or so.

how long should i make her sit in the corner???
(i did not spank her. because i am not her mother or father)

another question is, would you let your depressed, angry, violent, alcoholic brother watch your daughter/son???

You would make her sit for 4 mins only 1 min per childs age…..
get her out and tell her to clean the mess….you are the one in charge.

Are you the depressed, angry, violent alcohlic brother? Because I wouldn’t let you watch my child if you were or not. 30 minutes is too long and you know that. That’s why you asked the question. It’s just as much your fault and your sisters fault that she made the mess. You should have been awake and your sister should never have left her if you weren’t. That’s so wrong. She could have killed herself or made her self sick by eating or drinking something she shouldn’t. Neither one of you should be taking care of this girl.

first off a time out is done by age so 4 should be 4 minutes, and if no one was awake to watch her, she was bored and cut things up, who ever was suppose to be watching her should have the time out not her, shame on who ever dropped her off, without waking some one up to care for her, you and your family are very lucky something very bad could have happened to her, she could have been hurt or gone outside and been harmed anything, count your blessings that child is OK, get off the computer and give her some love and attention

One she should not have been left while you were sleeping. Second making her eat more food after she is full is not a good thing to do it could make her vomit. Making her sit in the corner for that long is not acceptable punishment for a four year old. And hell no I wouldn’t leave my child with anyone that messed up.

She should not be punished. Your sister should have gotten you up. Do you think they are born knowing how to behave?

According to The Nanny from Super Nanny A child should sit 1 minute per year of age. But you were there you are the adult and If 30 minutes is what it took then I think you did the right thing. 2nd question is hard to answer without actually knowing the person.

Accoding to Super Nanny you should have them sit still on a step or in a corner for 1 minute per year of age(4 minutes in this case). Then make them clean up. If they argue or dont listen the sit again.

Absolutely not. I love my siblings dearly but i wouldnt trust the life of my child with a person who would risk that much of their own.

As far as the punishment goes I think it’s alright for her to sit there for 30 minutes. If she acts up again sit her there for a little longer. My father used to make my sisters and I kneel on the tile floor in the corner until he thought we had learned. I think kneeling is a bit much because when you get up after being there for 30 minutes your legs hurt and you have the imprints of the tile on your legs, but sitting sounds good. It’s good that you didn’t spank her without permission. My sisters and I have agreements that we can spank each others children for certain things but not all. I know that alot of parents don’t like anyone to spank their children besides them.

Personally, I think the length of the time out depends more on the child. If they don’t seem to be taking the punishment for what it is after 4 minutes, then let them stay there until they realize that they are being punished, and show some remorse for what they’ve done. If she seems to be sorry, or is apologizing for her behavior, then time’s up!

I would not allow someone that I knew was abusive to himself (alcoholic) and others (violent, angry) to care for my children.

At 4 30minutes might be too long. Try more like 10 to 15 minutes. It would seem like a reasonable punishment then.

And no I wouldn’t let my brother watch my child at any age if they had those problems. I especially would never drop my child off to be watched by someone who was sleeping. I mean come on they should have at least woke you up!

for one that was not smart to drop her off while you were sleeping. she could have walked out the door, or gotten into something toxic.

She is just a child and needs constant watching. The rule is 1 minute per year of the age. So 4 years old 4 minutes.

For the second, if thats you your talking about then you need to figure out whats bothering you and get it all fixed and on the right track.

I think less than 30 mins would have been enough. We don’t these children to stick longer too on their angry feelings. It is important after any punishment that you tell the kids WHY they were punished.

If I am the parent, I wouldn’t leavemy son to any person who is self- admitted alcoholic and violent

when i babysit, i find the kids listen better if you put them in time out for one minute for every year old they are. if this child is 4 put them in time out for four minutes, if it continues, tell them to sit there until they are ready to apologize. good luck

1) I would say 15 minutes is good for an offense like that.
2) No way in Hell. I have heard horror stories from doctors and such about alcoholic babysitters and parents. It’ll be much easier to find a sitter.

not okay. a four year old not only may not know its not okay, but being left alone while u slept she was left with no structure, leaving her to findomething to do. Its luck she didnt get hurt by thescissors. Making her clen it up is bad enough , but her sense of time is different than yours. for 4 years olds time out of 5 mins feel like an hour, and they teach a lesson. 30 minutes is torture,. its a good thing you didnt spank her, you could be arrested if your sister felt like complainging( only biolgical parents can legally spank nd even that isnt spanking like in the old days) she doesnt even know hat she is doing is wrong when she does that stuff. she need tpo be supervised at all times.

Well all i can say is that your sisters messed up,1 rushed off to work and the other didnt even wake you to look after the little girl,also yes 30 minutes is far to long for any young child to have to sit in a corner,it should be 1 minute for each year of there life(4 minutes then) if you ask me then i would say THANK GOD its not my kids your looking after!!!!

30 minutes is way way too long for a 4 year old. The general rule for very young children is one minute per year (age).
And no I dont think I would leave my child w/ someone who is depressed & violent or a drunk but if at the time they are sober, they have never been violent to the child than I guess thats their choice – half the world is depressed so in my opinion that is not even worth mentioning unless they are suicidal.

30 min is a bit long for a 4 yr old. I dont care what some nanny sais. I have raised lots of children, and now have one of my own.
First of all, both u and your sister are wrong for leaving a 4 year old alone. You need to admit your mistake to the child and apologize, or else how is the child going to learn to admit theirs.
Second yes the child should be punished, even though it was not really her fault, she still did something wrong and should be corrected.
Try helping clean the mess. At 4 kids are more social beings. Generally they will have no problem helping.
Keep in mind she is 4. Kids forget things sometimes, and do crazy things. Just be thankful nothing bad happened to her.
Just an example, when i was 3 i drank bleach because my mother was not watching properly, if it tatsted good i probably would have drank more, but luckily not enough to do real bad damage.
And I seriously hope you are not the brother in question.
In the USA, DCF(department of children and families) can take a child away for leaving them in the care of someone like that. That person needs to take l-tryptophan and vitamin supplements to heal himself before trying to watch any children.

I take it you’re the angry violent brother. And No, I would not leave a little girl with you.
If you knew she was coming, you should have been awake in time, so it’s not her fault she made a mess. If she didn’t dish up her food, she should not be expected to eat it all. Little girls can’t eat as much as grown uncles. As for the time out, a child her age shouldn’t sit for more than five minutes, since she’ll forget why she’s being punished in that amount of time.

No I wouldnt let my blah brother watching my children. And I dont. My brother IS a mess, he has 4 children of his own and cant even take care of himself. He offers to watch my boys and I politely decline, even if it means I need to cancel my plans because there is no one else.

The general rule for punishing children is 2 minutes x thier age. So yes 30 minutes is a little long for a 4 year old.

The problem with children, is after a while.. After eating, and then in time out for so long. She will forget what she is actually in trouble for.

Kind of like puppies. (NOT THAT CHILDREN ARE DOGS! WORK WITH ME PEOPLE!) You wouldn’t bop your dog for pooing on the floor, and then bop him again for it 30 minutes later, they wouldn’t know what was going on.

Children have amazingly short attention spans.

My son is three, and we usually go by the three step rule. I will tell him to do something once, and remind him once, but once we reach three he gets a time out for about 6 minutes. Like you he is not alowed to talk in time out. No TV no toys. If he insists on misbehaving in time out. He is sent to his room for the time out. (there are no toys in my sons room, he has a seperate room for his play things. So he goes and can only sit on his bed.) Regardless when his timeout is over he still has to finish what he started. In your case cleaning up the newspaper.

It was bad for mother to not wake you up but i understand the punishment phase of this however it understandable for a kid to get bored and get into things….but time out for only 4 minutes 1 min per year. after that its inefective because its pure torture and she doesnt know why shes there anymore.
