We had the granchildren this weekend and I love them dearly but they absolutly Drove me insane with the WHINING I”M BORED. They have TV, Books, Movies, Playstation 2, Computer, and bikes, and 2 acres of yard.We do many Crafts when they are here. I made them Doll houses from Cardboard, and then halloween decorations, and Christmas decorations. We makew all sorts of stuff together.But I am running out of Ideas. that can interest a 6,8 and 12 year old. And still I’M Bored every 5 minutes. We painted Halloween decorations. Lasted maybe 2 hours and back to I’m Bored. The Boy will be 12 halloween morning, He is in the gifted and talented class I am not sure why. He can’t add 10 and 10 and get a right answer. But he is in 5th grade and is supposed to read at an 8th grade .level. But yet asks how to spell simple words. The second girl is in 2nd grade and she is even worse.The 3rd one had to repeat kindergarden. They have toys out the but, has their own TV and video movies and never turns on the TV. Thye have a bicycle, a swingset, and take them to the library and get them books they never read them after we check them out. She whines all day long. they would be great if they could be in School 7 days a week. Their mother is a lazy piece of work. She works 2 to 10 at night. And when she is home either has a cell phone growing out of her ear or her nose stuck in the computer.And ignores the kids.they have to find things to amuse themselves. And Their dad our son is an alcoholic. If he is not at work from 7 a.m until lord knows what time he gets home. He goes through 2 cases of beer a week.So they are watched by their Aunt that lives with them All she wants to do is abuse them. And screams at her 2 all day long. But I need to find something to keep them busy when they come over. That is low cost and entertaining.
I have called Social services on their Aunt So many times. I have truned her into the police, and the cops have been to their house at least 6 times in the past year. Their father and a friend of his got drunk, got into a fight, his friend attacked our son and the guy hit him in the ear they were both arresrested for Battery 3rd Degree. Then his same friend tried to commit suicide out their last weekend with the kids there. The ambulance was called Cops came out still nothing done. But the children talked about it all weekend. With daddy drinking, Mommy ignoring them, And Aunt yelling at them. I pulled in to get them Firday noght and the 3 of them ran and got in my truck the Adults never even came out to see who was there and got the kids. I called them when I got home and told them kids were with me. They never even answered the door when I rang the bell. The kids said Aunt was busy and mom was sleeping, and dad was not home yet. Real worried I guess.

Can’t think of much else to say. Except their home life must be having a profound affect on them.

I think I’d involve social services to be honest.

Sounds like you have done your very best.

I think that with all of the information that you have, it is safe to say that the environment that they live in is not a safe or healthy place for children to be. You should take them to court and try and get guardianship of them. It might be an inconvenience for you but if it is good for the children then it is important. To address what to do when they are “bored,” there is a very quick way to solve that. Place a chart on the refrigerator or other central location. Each of the kids can have a section of easy things to do from small chores, to reading a book, to helping a sibling or even a simple game or craft that they could do by themselves. When they say that they are bored take them over to the chart and show them the options of things to do. Tell them that they can choose anything on the chart that they want to do but if they finish all of the chores on the chart then they can get a treat (like a small toy or a trip out to get ice cream). This solves the issue of them being bored by giving them many options of things to do, and it also allows them to be independent and they have the opportunity to win a prize if they so choose.
It sounds like you really love the children. Good luck with all that you do!

His earlier teachers probably used flash cards with words on them, and said something like "the letters here are 'd-o-n-e', which spells done". From then on, he knew if he saw those letters together, he knew what the word was. As for simple math--kids today don't know how to do it. From 1st grade on, they are required to have a scientific notation calculator as part of their school supplies. I was taught the old-fashioned way: the best calculator a person has is right between their ears (their BRAIN) if they just learn to use it.
If you pay for the mother's internet connection/cell phone bill, STOP MAKING PAYMENTS. Same with the son's beer. He needs Alcoholics Anonymous in the worst way . Tell him to go to meetings, or face dying from liver disease (cirrhosis). Or throw his butt into drug/alcohol rehab. As for the Aunt's abuse of the kids--sue the parents in court for custody. Make them wake up to the fact that Grandma BJ won't be around forever to save them. Abuse can kill--mental abuse is worse than physical because the scars don't show. It also carries from one generation to the next.]

There is ALOT of info here so I’m only going to address the title question. I don’t think the children are overachievers. I think they simply have not learned to self-entertain. It’s a problem with many kids of this generation because we all bought into the “stimulation from birth” with all these toys that flash lights and make sounds at every touch, etc. Mental stimulation makes for a smarter baby is what they say to us. In the end constant mental stimulation makes for a brain that doesn’t know how to slow down and constantly wants more and more. It’s like your son and his alcohol. Eventually one beer doesn’t give a buzz so you need 2, then 3. Same with these toys.

IMO they are old enough to create their own fun without all the planned activities. Kick’em to the backyard if needed and tell them they have to stay there for 1 hour. They can either sit and do nothing or eventually their imaginations will kick in and they will make up their own games.
