I was told to put rubbing alcohol on my son’s umbilical cord stump and the bottle my mother bought says 70% alcohol. Is there a difference in the two or is all bottled alcohol the same?
there are different percentages bottled differently (not sure exactly why?), but its all “Rubbing alcohol”.. works just the same.

Actually no, there are different kinds of rubbing alcohol. Basically, the rubbing means it is NOT suitable for drinking and is for topical use. Generally most of the rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol; however, you can find ethyl rubbing alcohol. You can tell the two apart by two ways. First, simply read the label. The second is to smell the alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol has the standard “rubbing alcohol” smell everyone knows. Ethyl rubbing alcohol has a distinctive sweet smell.
Also, the concentration of alcohol varies. Most rubbing alcohol is 70% isopropyl alcohol, although you can find 95% isopropyl alcohol along with lesser percentages if you look for it. If you are worried about killing bacteria, 70% isopropyl alcohol is the most bacteriocidal.
Your best bet is the general, all purpose 70% isopropyl alcohol.

There is isopropyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol. I know they smell different and the ethyl is more expensive, but I don’t know if one would be better than the other for umbellical cord carre. They are both rubbing alcohol however, but isopropyl is the more common. Good luck and congrats on your son!

70% is fine.
90% and up is usually used in electronics including electronic medical equipment because it dries faster. Less chance of moisture leaking into the seams causing bad things to happen.

The 70% alcohol kills more germs than the plain one.
