The Reagan administration intensified both the assault on the working class and the turn to financial speculation. Reagan’s firing of 13,000 PATCO air traffic controllers in August of 1981 was the signal for a wave of corporate union-busting and wage-cutting in every sector of the economy. This was accompanied by sweeping cuts in social spending and the gutting of legal restraints on corporate profit-making, including the weakening or lifting of banking regulations.

The decade of the 1980s saw the elimination of 10 million jobs, on the one side, and an explosion of new forms of financial speculation on the other. There was a marked increase in leveraged corporate buyouts. The phenomenon of junk bonds emerged, along with the beginnings of securitization, in which various forms of debt, including mortgage debt, were packaged as bonds and sold to banks, brokerage houses, pension funds, insurance companies and other big investors. The stock market assumed an ever more central role in determining the investment policies of corporations and banks, demanding immediate and high returns at the expense of research and development and long-term planning. The result was an ever-greater accumulation of paper values and debt, which provided the basis for the enrichment of the uppermost social layers at the expense of the vast majority of the population. To cite one statistic: In 1970, wages and salaries comprised 75.4 percent of national income. By 1986, that figure had fallen to 61 percent. The narrowing of economic disparities that had been under way for several decades was reversed.

In reality, the 1980s saw a catastrophic decay in the foundations of American capitalism. Between 1981 and 1986, the US share of world exports slumped from over 20 percent to 13.8 percent. Between 1973 and 1983, US steel production fell 44 percent. The national debt more than doubled under the Reagan administration.

In October of 1987 Wall Street suffered its greatest ever single-day crash in percentage terms, as equities lost 23 percent of their value. The decade ended with the savings and loans collapse, in which more than 1,000 institutions failed and the government organized a bailout costing $160 billion. The sharp decline in the global position of American capitalism was summed up in the transformation of the US in the 1980s from a creditor nation, a status it had maintained since the end of World War I, to a net debtor.

There is much more to that than many Americans know or are willing to admit to knowing.

Why is it that a black man caught with 5 grams of crack cocaine gets the same prison sentence that a white man caught with 500 grams of powder cocaine gets? Could it be because white men who use/used powder cocaine are the one’s who wrote the law? And it helps to put a disproportionate number of blacks in prison, so they can’t scare white people? And why aren’t all the bigmouths in the black community shouting this to the heavens, like Al Sharpton and Jessie jackson? This law looks very racist, and I’m a white guy.

I think it is possibly true.

Reagan used the Drug War as a tool to suppress minorities, to erode civil liberties, etc. In fact I really think this was the original purpose of the Drug War, as started by Nixon. It certainly hasn’t helped the drug situation. In fact, the more we spend, the worse the situation gets.

Before the War on Drugs, police couldn’t break down doors, they had to have a warrant to search a house or a car, or tap a phone. Before the War on Drugs, a cop couldn’t stop a person on the street and demand ID and to know what he was doing there, unless there was some real reason to suspect him of something.

Today something like 1/3 of all young black men are either in prison or on probation or parole. Govt. agents walk the streets of black neighborhoods trying to sell crack to young black men, so they can arrest them, plea-bargain a confession, and put a felony on their records. This started under Reagan. Plus it was shown later pretty conclusively that the Contras were funded by illegal drug sales, helped in this effort by the CIA.

And when you consider that crack cocaine used by blacks carries like 100x the penalties of powder cocaine used by people like GW Bush, it really does look like a conspiracy, doesn’t it?

No it’s not true, it’s just the ghettos “excuse” for being ghetto….they refuse to take on personal responsiblity…if they create a conspiracy theory that suddenly takes the responsiblity off of them & puts it on someone else for their failure.

And even if it was true, no one forces anyone to use drugs…it’s a personal decision that cannot be blamed on anyone but themselves.

Kind of the old “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink” adage…implying that if drugs are even available that they MUST consume them…

the theory is not credible – during the 1980′s in NYC people in the village use to tell me reagan invented AIDs to kill off the gays. some people will believe anything. i say provide me something credible to believe in.
here are some important facts-
not at all, blacks moved from low to middle classes at the fastest rate in history during reagan’s presidency.
they also moved middle to upper class at the fastest rate in history.
many of us in the black community feel that welfare has done damage to our community – because it encourages failure and separates families. very much like modern day slavery…

Reagan, along with Phil Grahm, McCain’s campaign Manager and his wife pushed the Glass, Seinfold Act ( or something like that), which opened the Gates of Hell for the Greedy Bastards, and gave them Free Reign to use our labor and money and Military to make themselves Wealthy beyond their Wildest Dreams~!!!
