is it normal to drink a beer in the car?

On the way home from work tonight my father in law stopped at the store bought a beer and drank all of it while driving the six minute drive home from the store. It is not the first time this has happened. He told us it was normal and everyone does that? Do they? Are we all being too uptight to be concerned about this? He drinks alone, he hides beer all over the house, he fights with his wife about how he can drink if he wants to – its his right. It seems to us he has a problem. Plus, he is the son of two alcoholics, grandson of one and nephew of two others. My husband is worried that Dad is following in their footsteps, are we concerned for no reason?
We showed him your answers and he insists it is not a big deal. He started blaming others for his actions and then walked out and refused to listen or speak about it. He said he knows he does not have a problem. Is it denial?

Your concerns are valid. No, not everyone drinks beer while driving or downs one in six minutes. Usually when someone is hiding someone, that is a big sign of a problem. Don’t ride in the car and if you have children, don’t allow them in the car with him.

It is pretty normal, and I’ve done that loads of times. It’s what’s known as a ‘traveller’. Couple of things, though – I’m Australian, so take that how you will – and the rest of the things you say about your father-in-law do indicate that he might have a problem.

Drinking in the car is abnormal AND illegal AND dangerous.

You definitely should be concerned. He may kill you if he gets into a wreck while you’re in the car. He’ll destroy the car, and you won’t have any transportation.

He is definitely an alcoholic. .

No, its not normal at all!

It doesn’t matter how short the drive is from the store to your house;
drinking and driving is ILLEGAL and DANGEROUS.
Not just to you and your dad, but to other drivers and pedestrians on the road.

None of you are being uptight about anything; you have a right to be concerned about this. Drinking and driving is an extremely serious matter.

There are people who drink and drive, but they all wind up in prison. It’s impossible to hide it from the police when they pull someone over. They check your eyes, breath, and they make you do some tests to confirm that they have been drinking.

And yes, it seems that he is in denial. He simply does not want to know the truth and he just wants to keep doing what he thinks is right, when its not. Its very likely that he thinks that he will not get in trouble with the law just for drinking while driving. It’s a very serious matter.

Yeah, this is pretty bad. Of course “everyone” does not get a beer and drink it in their car within 6 minutes. Of course, doing so is illegal. Of course, a person who does that regularly, and who also hides alcohol around the house and has relationship problems due to drinking has a drinking problem, and of course, a person who doesn’t see this is in denial.
