Why on earth would you, as a responsible parent, want to give a child a drink?? Are you brain dead?

Of course you can. As long as your not giving your kid alcohol to get drunk.
my dad sometimes gave me some beer when i was a kid. seriously, if you feel confident about it – do it.
and think of it this way – your giving your kid the opportunity to drink in the house with you. if he’s determined to try it, then you know he’s going to do it outside.
that’s what’s dangerous.

If no one finds out it really doesnt matter I guess but in America at least if the police find out they can charge you with a fine for serving alcohol to a minor

I think it depends on the age of the child. If your son is 6 you will probably be jailed for allowing him to drink! but I am guessing he is a fair bit older than that. I dont think it would be illegal to allow a 12+ child to drink a few sips of alcohol.
