These words I have found to be most helpful when trying to communicate:
“More”, “all done”, “hot”, “yes & no”.

(Kids love animals and I bet he would find it fun to be able to say his favourite animal also it might motivate him to learn more)

The word hello
(This will help him because people will find from this that he is very polite and sociable and it could help give people an idea of what sort of personalioty he has)

The word Thank you
(Thank you is used ALLOT in day to day language also it is polite)

Your name
(It seems that you love him tpo pieces and it sounds like you are very close and he might be grateful if he can say your name, and it would make you feel happy to)

I’m sure you have picked up on the messages his behaviors indicate – what he does when he’s tired, how he lets you know he’s hungry, etc.

Start with those situations in which he has to indicate his wants and needs. Most parents I have worked with over the years have said “If I could just know what he/she wants…”
The use of the sign will give you son more control over his environment, so select those that are most important to him; when he comprehends that his signs can “make something he wants happen”, he has made an important jump in his communication.

I’d suggest starting with the signs for “eat” and “drink” If he is toilet trained, add the sign for “bathroom” What gives him the most pleasure? Outdoor play? A favorite toy? Those are meaningful and important to him, so teach those signs. I have mixed feelings about the signs for “yes” and “no” and they require a level of comprehension and are responses, not initiations.

You might consider using photographs of the items/actions to increase his understanding of the signs. I always recommend using a digital photo of the exact object he’s used to. You might also look online for images. I have a Mom who searched to find the exact carton of yogurt her son eats. A formal “picture exchange” program isn’t necessary for your son to develop communication.

You don’t say what his chronological age is, however it sounds as if your son is receiving early intervention services. If and when he receives preschool special education services through your school system, the speech therapist and his teacher will build upon what you have started; a preschool special education classroom is a treasure trove of communication systems. If needed, your son might also be evaluated by the school’s Assistive Technology department to determine the best communication approach as well as provide devices if necessary.
