I want to move my son away from his dad…my son is 18 this spring..?

My son’s father is giving my son pot to smoke–supplying him with alcohol…(MY son’s father is an alcholic/drug user–hasn’t held a jog for years) I know you can’t run away from your problems–but my son is taking on a lot of his dad vises..My son is 18 this year–and I want him to get counselling BUT more importantly I want my son to live as far away from his DAD as possible NOW–before my son settles into his college years…Am I doing the right THING????? I have been toying with this for YEARs–but now that my son is turning 18 (and I see the influence–I want to move HIM) PLEASE HELP!!
I want to add that my son is not prepared to live on his own…also my ex was also physically abusive (therefore when I move my son I’m aware he willl need help/therapy)….
I want to add That my son lives with me–HE can’t stand his dad’s drinking (HE has had the oppurtunity to live with his dad many times but refuses!!) Do I have a chance?

Good for you for wanting to do what is best for your son but a couple of things concern me. If your son is 18, he doesn’t have to go with you. He may choose to stay on his own or WITH his dad. Also, if he’s already started smoking/drinking, chances are that this behavior will continue (and probably get worse) when he’s in college. Things to think about .

Sorry, if you were thinking about this for years, that is when you should have acted, while you had a say. At 18, I’m sure you know, he can do what he wants. Good luck…sometimes a dose of tough love works wonders…..think about that.

I hate to say it, but the chance of you getting your son away from his dad is slim to none. Put yourself in your son’s position. He has a choice…stay with dad and get all the pot and/or alcohol he wants or go someplace new and have to struggle just to make a living and possibly put up with someone nagging him all the time. The choice is a no-brainer from his perspective. At 18, all you can do is wait for him to outgrow that stuff (if he ever does).

Yes! You are definitely doing the right thing. Just be warned that once he turns 18 he can refuse to go with you. Do it now before his next birthday. If his father tries to cause trouble with you over it, ask him how he feels about being turned in for giving your son pot and alchohol. I am surprised you didn’t report him long ago (no judgement here, just wondering). You are doing the best thing possible for your son and it takes a lot of courage, but I am proud of you. Your son is going to throw a fit over the idea, but hold your ground. If you wait until he turns 18 he might tell you he is moving in with his father. Your son needs to see that his father’s life is a shambles and he is heading in that same direction. I hope everything turns out well for you and your son! You are being a good mom!

i think you’ve left it too late to move your son away, he’s an adult and needs to make his own mistakes not to mention the fact that he might end up resenting you. you should of moved him years ago if his dads such a bad influence, all you can do now is be there for your son and try and get him back on the straight and narrow. think yourself lucky its just pot he smoking.
he’s an adult and can make his own choices so i dont think you got any chance of making him go to counselling
