I think my neighbors are abusing their 7 year old son…?

I always hear him screaming, crying, etc, and I’m getting kind of worried. My best friend knows the dad personally and she said he can get pretty nasty once you piss him off. I know both parents drink alcohol occasionally but nothing too bad. I don’t know if I should call the police since I really don’t have proof he’s being abused. After all, he might just be a spoiled brat. I’ll feel like an idiot if I call the police and he’s not actually being abused… What should I do?

More than likely he’s a spoiled brat. When you start to see a number of broken bones and unexplained bruised, then you can stick your nose in. Until then I would back off.

A report won’t hurt anything, ask to remain anonymous. In the state of Illinois, EMTS, doctors, Police, school teachers, and other officials are mandated reporters, meaning if we have a run in with someone we think is abusing a child we have to report it to the Child and Family Services. Even if the report is unfounded there are chances that at least the parents will think twice about doing it. There is a chance the child could be hurt before you call. Don’t drag your feet, even good parents are reported and shouldn’t feel as though they are a target, they should know that someone cared enough to call to make sure their children are checked on.

hard call. you can make an anonymous report to your local child protective services. personally i’d try to get a look at the kid first. maybe talk to someone at the school who can check it out.
