How possible is it for a husband to recover from an alcoholic addition, and him and his family live peacefully?

My son’s father is an alcoholic, and he has refused treatment, not wanting to make changes etc. So I left him. Well, we are learning that we really love each other. He wants it to work, and he has the passion. We are willing to go to mediation, because well he’s being an ass of a father, an ass to me. it’s going down, that either he get his act together, or me and his son are out of his life until he does. But I’m wondering, what if I do commit to helping with his problems, like going to counseling with him, helping him if he needs to go to rehab. Do alcoholics really turn around? Do they live a better life, or are they just constantly thinking about wanting a drink. Is it worth it, IF he does quit. Does anyone have any success stories, or any experience they can share with me

Some people struggle with it others get it under control.
My father was an alcoholics for about thirty years and then one day just quit drinking and only had a beer or two on the weekends once in a while.

It is possible for hi to turn his life around, but HE has to want to do it. he needs to go to AA and any other counseling that is necessary. it is his issue to deal with not yours. You can go to Al-Anon, which will help you and your son in dealing with the issues an alcoholic brings to a relationship. Good luck.

Among people who go to rehab, about 4% actually recover. The statistics are terrible. People will respond and tell you how they did it, and I know some people do, but they are truly few.

If he wants to be sober and is willing to do what it takes, rehab, AA meetings etc. there is a good chance.

There is no reason you should be involved in counseling or rehab , those are really personal issues.

You should be going to Al anon and he to AA.

Until your husband openly admits he has a problem with alcohol and actively seeks help, he will continue being an alcoholic.

He has to want sobriety.
He has to work really really hard at being sober, and maintaining that through life.
He will probably need a support group like AA and a sponsor to help him get past the urges to drink, or developing another debilitating addiction.

I’ve met people that have been sober for 30+ years, have gone on to become successful and have good relationships.
But it’s something that they had to work for.
And it’s also a history that they had to forgive themselves for.

I wish you the best, but until your husband commits to helping himself, I would say move out and don’t allow his drama to take you down into the hell he lives through daily.

Yeah my husband had success in quitting. My husband was a full blown alcoholic at the beginning of our relationship. I’d had enough and was about to leave. I have enough experience in my past life with alcoholics to know that you don’t argue with them…. you don’t issue them ultimatums….. you don’t threathen them. Everything is worthless. If they want to quit drinking, they’ll do it when THEY’RE ready and not until then. So I just started looking for my own place to live without ever saying a word to my husband. I was just going to leave without a word to him. He was hearing on the voice mail different realtors and rental offices calling me that I had contacted about places I’d looked at but by then, there was really no communication between us.

I started noticing that he wasn’t drinking anymore at night. Or going out. I still didn’t hold out hope because I know how good they are at lying and hiding things. I still kept my mouth shut and just watched. And waited and watched. He never came home drunk again. This is a guy who used to come home staggering every night and couldn’t form sentences…. not one day out of the week.. Now, he did it without AA or a doctor, which is unusual. Most people do need help and support. He’s been sober now for 15 years.. He just decided he’d had enough one day and focused his mind and energy on his work and turned himself around but a lot of people DO need more support and help than that and I know that. Whatever they need to get through it to get them to the final result.

But he got to the point now where he can be around people drinking fine. All his friends drink. It doesn’t bother him in the least. He hates drunks now and he bad mouths people who are exactly like he used to be (falling down drunk). Best of luck to you. I hope everything works out for you. I know how hard it is to live that life.

Yes, alcoholics really DO turn around. There is a lot more hope than you think, and this business about “nobody really does it” or “even after alcoholics quit, they are still jerks” is not true. It IS difficult, and not everyone is successful, but it is absolutely possible.

I am living proof. I drank for 25 years and, 12 years ago, decided that I was done with it. I quit, have never relapsed, went to therapy for 5 years and have totally turned my life around. Most of the people in my life today would never guess I once had a problem. I am happily married (to my second husband) and have great relationships with both of my children. I have many friends and a successful career as a lawyer.

So…give the man a chance. You are right, though, to say that if he continues to be an ***, you’re gone. He deserves a chance, but if he doesn’t take it, you need to move on.

Oh, and show him this website. AA is definitely NOT the only or the best way to get sober!!!!!
