All the troops do in korea is drink. They are only allowed off post in groups.as the korean people do not want americans there. He needs help before the army kicks him out. He is a new father and really needs to get help to keep his family togather. his wife is considering divorce, he is not physically or verbally abusive.I am a heartbroken Mom.

Suggest counseling. Since he is an adult it is really his choice to get help. You can’t force him.

Ok I understand you have a problem with your son drinking. You should send him to alcoholics anonymous or rehab if its really serious
BUT
All troops in Korea do not drink Ok?
My friend was stationed in Korea and did she drink and become an alcoholic? NO. So please think before you make a statement about a whole group of people.Hey someone gave me a thumbs down that also can make an assumption about a whole group of people.

I totally understand your problem. My husband is over there and in the beginning he tried as hard as he could to stay away from all of that, but he got in trouble for being a “barracks rat” and was told to go out with the guys. Now he goes off drinking every weekend. Did his wife not know that he was drinking? She should have been talking to him about it the whole time he was there. Things like “I understand that this is your life now, but please work this down before time to come home”
Talk to him, and tell him that you understand why he did it so much in Korea, that was the only thing to do, but now he’s home and it’s time to take care of his family. His wife should try to be patient with him, although it is asking a lot of her, but lets face it the military isn’t a normal job and it changes you.
Isn’t it ironic though that the Army would kick him out but yet they motivate you to go out at night.

The military does have AA meetings—so that’s the one thing he can do—-however, this will only work if he wants to get off the booze…..Tell your son to call AA–do not call any military facility to inquire about that–this way it will not be on record, and if he really is determined to get off the booze he can do so with a clean record. It won’t be easy—he’ll have to have a sponsor and he’ll have to go to meetings off post as much as he can—but I did owrk in Fort Jackson,SC, I do know that AA meets on post, and I have seen quite a few soldiers getting off the booze and staying out of trouble……good luck

You don’t make it easy for him. Don’t make excuses like “All the troops do in Korea is drink”. Truth is, all the drunks do in Korea is drink. When I stopped drinking 9 months into my second tour I was amazed to discover that the vast majority of troops there drank rarely or not at all. And you can find an AA meeting just about every day of the week.
In the end though it’s his choice. You can’t fix him. He has to recognize there’s a problem and decide to do something about it himself. Sometimes it takes a while.

i am not in the military, but i am a student here in korea. not only do the soldiers drink a lot, but the koreans do too (with exception to the really religious christian ones) every day as a matter of fact (as opposed to just the weekends for the american students).
But from what i hear, american soldiers are doing worse things than drinking, like frequenting whores on “Hooker hill” and raping women there.
Now, obviously NOT ALL soldiers do this, but it happens enough to give our military an infamous reputation…

He’s not drinking because he was or is in Korea. He’s drinking because he’s a drunk. Your “buying into” the “Korea made me drink” fable is allowing him to do what drunks do: manipulate the truth and the circumstances about their drinking.
He needs to get sober and get help in that order. He can either do that with the help of some organization or on his own. I did it on my own after consuming (what my shipmates said) was 40+ martinis one night at a club and going into an alcoholic coma. That was May 22, 1964. Haven’t had a drink since. -
