This man is 46, drinking himself into oblivion daily, has suffered broken ribs, black eyes, and coughing up blood all in the past month. We live in plymouth county massachusetts. how do we have him ‘sectioned’? (son is 22)
You would probably need to go to court. But he will only quit if he wants to and when he is ready.

You might not like this, but I suggest buying lot’s and lot’s of life insurance on him first, because he’s probably going to end up dead.
You CAN’T force him to detox, if he doesn’t want to, simple as that. If his parents are still alive, and agree with you, you can get a judge to sign an order to involuntarily commit him to a hospital. If his parents aren’t around anymore, you will need a signed order from 2 doctors to commit him. Perhaps your son, since he’s over 21 can also sign the orders.
