I took my almost 2 year old son to the doctor today due to a high fever and coughing; we found out he has walking pneumonia. His temp has ranged between 101.3 F and 104.3 F. We have gotten his prescription for the infection and he has been taking Motrin for the fever. Does anyone know of any home remedies that will lower his fever a little bit quicker than the Motrin (seems to take a while to kick in) or for those times that his fever is going back up and it’s not yet time to give another dose of medicine? I heard cool baths with rubbing alcohol will help but he really isn’t in the mood to get in the tub and I was hoping to be able to do this while he is resting. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Rotating between motrin and tylonel, cool bathes, cotton or no clothing, and lots of fluids.

My doctor used to tell me to trade off on tylenol then motrin…every two hours he was getting meds for the fever…but this was a long time ago with a fever that was much higher than this. You can always put cool rags under his arm pits and in the crease of his knees…and this will run it down a little quicker! Take the advice of the doctor though…not here as far as medicine fixes!

No alcohol, but a cool bath is in order with a fever that high whether he is in the mood or not. His temperature may be getting dangerously high while he is “resting” and there is the chance he will have convulsions if it gets too high.

the only thing is really know is a cool tub, weather he likes it or not i would put him in there and tell him that you want to get his fever down, or try a wash cloth and put it on his forehead. I hope he feels better soon.

keep him loosely covered. If you put too many blankets or clothes on him he will get too warm… Also make sure he has lots of liquids.. Pedialite is what I give my son. I have heard not to put them in cool baths.. And give him lots of cuddles and love.

He doesnt want to be in a bath… so bring the bath to him use a cool wash rag and hold it on his forehead , back,neck and stomach for a while and that should help. I have done this with my kids and it does help and I have 6 kids so give it a try.

popsicles, cool baths, you can swab him in alcohol, not a whole lot though. can he fit in the kitchen sink? i used to spray my daughter off with the sprayer. it makes it somewhat fun for him (hes probably super cranky) but gets the water all over. good luck!

If you live in a area that it is cold outside wrap him in a blanket and take him outside. Let him breathe in the cool air for a few minutes.

You can put rubbing alcohol on a washrag and rub their neck and arms and feet and that is supposed to get the fever down. If its real high. put them in a tepid bath.

Switch between Motrin and Tylenol every two hours until his fever stays down. Also, do the cold rag under his pits, knees, neck, and forehead. Alcohol also works, and make sure he is drinking plenty whether he wants to or not. If it comes down to it, you need to put him in cool bath.

It’s actually recommended that you NOT use rubbing alcohol on children under 2. It can be absorbed through the skin and is toxic to them.
A cool washcloth on vital spots (forhead, back of neck, over eyes) is soothing and cooling.
So are popsicles! =) (You can make your own, using Pedialyte, in your ice cube tray. That way they get less sugar and more of what they need, while still getting a cool treat.)
There’s a product you can get at the drugstore… it’s basically a cooling gel pack that you can stick on the forhead. It doesn’t contain any form of medicine, so won’t interfere with what he’s taking, but helps cool him off. http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=147346&catid=12895&trx=PLST-0-SEARCH&trxp1=12895&trxp2=147346&trxp3=1&trxp4=0&btrx=BUY-PLST-0-SEARCH (That’s the adult version, though I’ve only bought the kid’s kind before. DOn’t think there’ll be much difference besides size.)
WHen he was running a really, really high fever (104+), I’d also apply one along his upper spine, just below his neck. (That location is good because they can’t pull it off easily.)
Remember, the key is to keep his core and his head cool. You don’t need to put him in the tub — a wet washcloth works fine (and is less likely to cool him TOO much too quickly — which has its own problems.)

Rotate between Tylenol and Motrin, because one you can have every four hours and the other is every six. It keeps a constant stream of fever relief in there system. Let your two year old eat all the Popsicles he can stomach. (try to find low sugar ones) It’s amazing how much one Popsicle can help with the decrease of a fever. Cool baths two or three times a day can also help decrease a fever…..always take a temp before you but the baby in the tub… don’t want to use cool bath if temp is above 103, cause they will feel like your freezing them. If you don’t want to force him into the tub try ice packs wrapped in a face cloth on his forehead and chest. Another option is warm clothing, a fever can be sweated out. Good Luck…. Fevers in little ones are by no means fun.

Just so you know it’s not really COOL, it’s luke warm. If the water is too cool it can cause the body to react with a higher fever.

DO NOT DO COOL BATHS! It causes seizures. There is a GREAT book out there: How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of your Doctor. It was written by a family practice MD. SUPERB! An absolute MUST for all moms….. Good luck.

When he gets too hot like scary hot put him a cool bath shaking and all. No clothes except a t-shirt and diaper, and no covers when sleeping. Wipe with a cool cloth in the ‘hot spots’, arm pits, behind the knee, behind neck, groin area, and back. It sucks so bad and you kid will not like you, but once the temp is down he is more likely to sleep more comfortably and he might even take a bite or two of something.

Use a damp towl on his forhead. and if his temp get too high and it is not time for his med. You will have to put him in a tub but DON’T wet his head use the damp towl only about 5-20 min should bring down his body temp. hope he feels better.
