help my 5 year old son is addicted to drinking not alcohol just n e drinks?

my son is addicted to drinking mostly water this makes him wet himself often and he even drinks so much that he makes himself physically sick. we have even had to put locks on the doors in the kitchen and bathroom cause he will go in there when we are asleep or not looking and drink out the tap he does it n e where school and even friends houses. its getting a real big problem no matter how i punish him he just keeps doing it i have had medical tests on him for his bladder and for diabites but they all come back and say hes fine i dont know wat it is or what i can do please help he has been doin this since he was about 2 years old but has got worse lately

my two y/o does the same thing she still wakes up at least 4 times a night to get a drink she is constantly drinking she gulps so fast she literally throws up i i went to my docs and they ran the same tests juvenile diabetes etc. my docs dont seem concerned but i still am the only comfort i have is my father in law told me my husband was the same way as a child sorry i have no answers but i am dealing with the same thing good luck!

Most often the easy suggestion is… At this age and the early ages. Thirst is often misconstrued as a need for thirst but he is actually hungry. Many toddlers across the nation suffer from the same thing. It is strange to me today that the doctors do not mention this to you or many other moms.. Yes and to much water really is not a good thing it can cause death. Hard to believe isn’t it you can not drink all your need for water in one day in one sitting..It is to much for your body..Who ever knew..Some say oh this is a legend or Urban Legend..Its not.. It actually has a name called “WATER INTOXICATION”
So rest assured this is the easy mention.. be back I just wanted to get something to you..

Have they actually done the glucose testing where he drinks the liquid and waits an hour and they test him? He needs to be seen by a specialist. This is not normal.

You should get a second opinion, and have him checked again for diabetes, because thats really what it sounds like he has. But, before you do that, check out this website that i found. This girl seems to have almost the same problem as you, and have gotten some responses that may help you.

My first thought was diabetes honestly and you should get him checked again because it is not normal. I care for a little boy who is also the same way, if aloud he will drink water one cup right after another ALL day long. I mentioned it to his mother and she got him tested he was fine so I simply cut it out. I took away all the water (this kid scared the crap out of me, he drank so much his hands were cold and his lips blue!) except for a bottle at drop off int he morning, a cup at dinner and a bottle for his nap, he has one cup for afternoon snack and that is it, the cup (about 5oz) is taken away when it is empty and he has gotton use to this now. I am working on his naptime bottle (because the bottle has got to go and it eliminates one more drink which is 9oz- he always wakes up drenched in pee because of how much he drinks).

He is getting in routine now and his bladder is adjusting, potty training is something that can be done now! He would be wet literally 10 minutes after changing him before I cut out all the liquid (and not just a little pee, the diaper is always ready to leak or has! you can probably relate to all the peeing)

Have they worked him up for kidney disease. Excessive thirst, to the point of water intoxication, is a classic sign of kidney disease. PLEASE speak with your doctor about this. If he/she doesn’t take you seriously, see another doctor. Time is a factor on your side if you get treatment early.
