Having Problems With My 6 Year Old Son!?

Our 6 year old son has stolen 7 times within the last month from his father, little brother & myself (Mommy)! The first time he got a spanking and we sat down and talked to him and said we’d give him another chance. Second time he got spanked and put in the corner and a talk and something taken away that he likes third time corner and everything taken away. 3rd time and kept stealing we kept all his toys away from him no tv no play time no talking. I don’t know what to do. This last time I was very mad and had to walk down the street so I didn’t knock him out! Besides, this he is a good kid! He’s great in school good listener and also there to help someone out. Recently, he’s been really SNEAKY and LYING all the time about EVERYTHING and STEALING constantly! Also, when i went to talk to him. He told me he doesn’t love me & his father and he steals cause he gets what he wants when he wants it. I even tried counseling but that’s not even working. What do we do cause my husband wants to send our son to boot camp but I don’t know if that’s best. All this started about a month ago. He doesn’t have anyone negative in his life. there are no drugs or alcohol or cussing aloud in this house or around our son. We also keep all grown folk business between my husband and myself. Please someone help my family and I.

Don’t send him to a camp. He is feeling neglected. That’s why he is stealing. He is bolstering himself from this feeling by stealing things that look attractive. Material things, though they are temporary, are his source of comfort. That’s what is happening and he just wants some love. Be loving. There is no substitute for a parent’s love. Concentrate on the good things he does and praise him profusely. But be careful not to indulge him unnecessarily. Be firm and if he has unreasonable demands, don’t give in.
Another cause of his behaviour could be that you as parents refuse everything he wants. Give him something that has caught his fancy occasionally as long as the demand is not unreasonable.

I’m sorry to hear about that. Maybe try another counselor? 6 sounds kind of young to be doing those sorts of things, I think. Here’s some information about teaching kids to be honest and also some tips for disciplining that might be of help. Good luck!

I was a little on the fence on the believability of this scenario — it started only a month ago, yet there’s already been counseling? Huh?

And sometimes it is difficult to resist a little gentle Yahoo! Answers stalkery, and I notice you gave an e-mail address in a previous Q, and Googling that e-mail address brings up a post on Craigslist in re. “Homeless Family Needs A Lil Help.”

So, if this is a for-real problem and it was a for-real CL post, I would assume the two are related. A child dealing with stresses like that is going to act out, no question.

(But given the lack of “boot camp” for six-year-olds I’m going with “bored liar”)

Spanking, as you have already discovered, does not help. Contact your local council and ask them for help. They may be able to provide respite care for you. ( This is where your son spends a couple of nights with carers every week or month or any other arrangement which you are comfortable with. )

It does help alot, as it makes the child realise what they have at home and what life is like in care.

It didn’t help with me, but i was a little SH.IT. And they didnt intervene until i was 12.

If you do not seek help from external agencies, youre child will be placed either in care or prison.

In the meantime, lock everything valuable away.

Don’t send him to boot camp. When he steals ground him and take away all his privileges (ie.TV, computer, games, toys). Don’t spank him as it will make things worse and don’t send him to boot camp. 1 week of grounding will help.
