My nephew is intelligent (well above avg.), has loving parents and family, lives in upper/middle class area, parents don’t drink/smoke, etc. Problem: he’s abusing drugs/alcohol. He is 21 and decided he is just going to “take off” and “go where the wind takes him”. Unfortunately the “wind” has taken him to friend houses who are drug addicts/alcoholic/total losers and he is now just going from home to home trying to find a place to sleep (so he’s homeless). He will answer his phone if I call him but what can I tell him to make him see the light? What does he want to hear? What doesn’t he want to hear? Why is he being so f**king stupid! I want my nephew back and it’s breaking my heart.

You need to do intervention on him with other people that love him and tell him the truth how you feel, than try to get him in rehab.

he has to want to come home, for some reason he feels like he can get the type of attention he wants from these people, talk to him about spending time with you not going home and find out whats going on inside of him without mentioning home

Additction is a very powerful thing. There is nothing you can say or do to make him change. The change has to come from him.. he has to want to for himself. The best thing you can do is let him know that you are there for him, but you cannot make decisions for him. Good Luck to you, it’s very hard to watch someone you love hurt themselves.

Go away and let him hit bottom. Before you go however, let him know how much you love him and that you can’t wait untill he is the person you have loved and known. Drugs will steal your soul and I’m sorry you have to see somone you love go through that.

some people are determined to do what they want,no matter what other people think. the only way that they will learn,is by their own mistakes.it sounds like he is going to be one of those people.you can try talking to him.this is going to sound very mean but it just may be the only way too help him and that is, sometime when you know that he has drugs or is going to get some call the police.i know that doesn’t sound like a good idea because he could end up in jail,but it could be the only thing that will save his life.if he is addicted he could get mixed up with worse people than what he is now mixed up with. talk too his parents about it first and see what they think about getting him into intervention.

My son was in the way that your nephew is. For many years he went from home to home,drink all the time and using drugs. Every time I called him he would just tell me a story that he thought i wanted to hear. The only thing I could do was to let him know that he was loved and always opened my door up for him. He never did come to stay with me at my home, but what did turn him around was when he went to stay with his brother and his wife in Mi. This took him out of the party seen and away from the so called friend he thought he had. They say you are who you are around with. That is so true. after he got back from 3 month stay with his brother his head was clear and started to think about what he was doing in life. It has been 2 years now and he did get a good job, has a good girlfriend and is allot more wiser than before.
so all I can really say is:
1) love, lots of love.
2) don’ t judge him ( this will push him away)
3) try to get him out of areas he is in now.
4) never demand, make him feel like it was his idea.
I hope you get him back and I will pray for him.

God you need to set him steight take a no tolerance aproach he should not be allowed out on his own try keepin an eye on him then when you catch him threten to take him to the police if you catch him again then tell the poice they send somebody to his house every day to see what he is doing that should set him streight if not tell his girlfreind then she will be heartbroken it takes you to almost loose every thing to realise what yiu had in the first place tell him to remember the saying hold fast that which is good it means to keep what means alot to you close and dont let it get away … good luck David M
