Feeling sorry for my elderly neighbor is there an agency that can help?

I suspect that my elderly neighbor is the victim of emotional and financial abuse. She has her son and daughter living with her and they are both mistreating her terribly. The daughter screams at her all day and leaves her nothing to eat when she is out. There have been times when my neighbor has tried to cook for herself but was unable to, one time she unknowingly put metal in the microwave and caused a fire. My husband heard the fire alarm and helped her out of the house while I put out the fire. That’s when it was brought to our attention that she was not getting the help she needed. To make matters worse her son is a drug addict (meth) and steals her belongings even her medication than screams at her when she confronts him or asks where her pain pills are. Not to mention that they both had access to her bank account and she is not missing a total of $13,000.00 1/2 of the money she was saving for an “elders community” (it’s a fancy nursing/end of life home)

Is there someone I can call about this? I live in The San Fransisco Bay Area, California, USA.
I meant to say she is now missing $13K. Sorry I have a tenancy to type faster then I should and it causes typos.

this is elder abuse and they can both go to jail for this. I also live in california and as a first step i would call my local department of social services. they provide services for the elderly. once i had done that, i would call the police on these two scum bags! how disgusting of them to treat someone like this.

you can call the adult protective services im not sure the number but you can look it up in the phone book or next time you hear screaming call the police and tell them

Look into the internet under Department of Human Services, or look under Elderly Abuse, I do hope you can help her before it’s too late, but please call some one.

there is an elder abuse hot line that you can call and tell them what is going on. please do not wait before something happens

That is awful and you are no way being a ‘nosey’ neighbour, you seem to have complete empathetic understanding of the situation. Sadly, I live in Scotland so can’t really give you much constructive help. Here we would telelphone our Social Services and also the police if a family member is stealing from her but she would require to agree to this and even if she did it makes one wonder if she would be safe within such a dreadful family environment.

This should be reported for elder abuse! I’m having problems myself and have two daughter in laws that are abusive (or have been) but I’m living by myself and can take care of myself although it is hard and I have many problems such as memory, constant bleeding, loss of feeling in my finger tips which means spilling things and dropping easily, not being able to open jars sometimes, and trouble opening any packages or even new pills, etc. But I’d much rather be here by myself than be asbused by trashy DILS while my sons are working. Good grief. At least I have a guardian angel. The arthritis has been getting worse and I almost bled to death several weeks ago but regardless of anything, I firmly choose to live by myself. I get a ton of mail cause people want donations—I have been compassionate for years so that’s why but most is junk mail now. So have to go through all of that or the mail man is mad at me for not picking up my mail. Problems abound as I’m tired all the time, and slightly depressed all the time. The medicals tried to force me to take anti-depressants but how is that going to help with my physicasl problems? I tried one kind and really freaked out bad and could hardly keep from getting lost or having a car accident—they were the opposite of what I needed. The doctors just keep making mistakes and I don’t want them bothering me now. I had a horrible time trying to get disability benefits.

But it sounds like you must act right away There is the state Adult Protective Services, I gave you a web link, which you should call first as an outsider and they can name an independent conservator or payee for her social security. Look at your county website for senior services and social services and you will find it. There is Jewish Family Service which has abuse counseling with the whole family. Sonoma and S.F. are very good for non-profit private agencies that help seniors or abused elderly people in her condition. I dont know what county you’re in so I cannot look them up. Do a search under elder abuse in your county. Or call Eldercare Locator toll-free at 1-800-677-1116 for assistance in locating resources. Eldercare is sponsored by the U.S. Administration on Aging. The other link I gave you is Institute on Aging which I personnally know about.

If you can absolutely prove your allegations,call your local police department and tell them what you know. Elder abuse is a crime and does need to be reported.

There are already some good answers to your question. The dept. of health and Human Services should have a hotline for elder abuse. Hooray for you for being a concerned neighbor.

You can contact Adult Protective Services in your County. Most Counties in California have 24 hour abuse hot lines for this purpose. Another option is to call the police if you hear abuse going on.
