my son is on both boob and formula, but tonight im having my first few drinks in a few years so we’ve decided to bottle feed my son, but when will the alcohol be out of my system and ill be able to nurse him again?
can someone give me all the details etc.

this is a difficult question. generally alcohol is processed at 8 oz per hour through a female that is 5′ 4” and 135lbs. Keep in mind that this is with a meal and hydration. i would express my milk and discard for up to three days after drinking, but no one can really say when it is ‘gone’ so to speak. the general rule is if you are breast feeding, stay away from the alcohol. sorry i had just asked my doc the same thing, they weren’t not to helpful aside from just saying no

This website is great! It had a chart based on your weight and the amount of drinks you have!
You do not need to “pump and dump” the alcohol does not accumulate in your milk, once your blood alcohol level is zero so is your milk!EDIT: It is entirely safe to drink very occasionally while nursing, only 2% of the alcohol even goes into your milk, and like I said, once your blood alcohol level is zero your milk is entirely clear! They have test stripes you can buy for this reason!

Just bottle feed him the next day, if you only have a few (say 3-4) one day will be more than enough time for it to leave your system.

Alcohol passes freely into mother’s milk and has been found to peak about 30 to 60 minutes after consumption, 60 to 90 minutes when taken with food. Alcohol also freely passes out of a mother’s milk and her system. It takes a 120 pound woman about two to three hours to eliminate from her body the alcohol in one serving of beer or wine…the more alcohol that is consumed, the longer it takes for it to be eliminated. It takes up to 13 hours for a 120 pound woman to eliminate the alcohol from one high-alcohol drink. The effects of alcohol on the breastfeeding baby are directly related to the amount the mother consumes.

If you choose to do that, breastfeeding should be avoided for 2 hours after the drink. The more alcohol you drink the longer you should wait. If you are nervous about feeding the baby after a drink or two, you might just pump that feeding and discard. Use a stored supply of breastmilk or supplement with formula if needed.

I would wait at least a week. There could be small traces of alcohol for several days. I breast fed my children and they could tell even when I had some garlic in my pasta.

The safest route is to not drink alcohol until you are not breastfeeding anymore. As mentioned above, alcohol is most certainly excreted into breast milk. If it has been a few years since you last drank alcohol, certainly you can hold off until your baby is independently fed away from your breast. Plan a celebratory dinner with your husband in 6 months time (or whenever your target time for weaning your baby is) and share some wine or champagne to toast your responsible, loving parenting!

About 2 hours for every drink you have (you start timing from the beginning on your drinking session). So, if you start drinking at 8pm, and have 3 drinks, the alcohol should be out of your system by 2am). Just FYI, it is okay to have a couple of drinks and nurse right away according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
