My son was previously on different stimulant medications (Ritalin, Adderall and Metadate). Never really had good response with any. Adderall was okay but he lost so much weight. Now his doctor wants to try Intuniv with him. She says it’s not a stimulant and I was wondering were non stimulants bad. With the others we were able to stop the medication at any time but with this it has to be gradually stopped. So will his body be dependent on this medication like drugs(cocaine or heroin)?

The fact that it’s not a stimulant doesn’t automatically make it bad, but there are positives and negatives to both stimulants and non-stimulants. http://www.drugs.com/intuniv.html (the same printout you’d get from the pharmacist) says “Do not stop taking this medication without first talking to your doctor. If you stop taking Intuniv suddenly, your condition may become worse and you could have unpleasant symptoms” so it’s not that he’ll be addicted like to those drugs, but he won’t be able to stop it suddenly without side effects. There are other side effects and benefits listed on that page, so I would take that into consideration before getting a prescription for it (so you can be an informed consumer).
