has any 1 on here ever lived with an alcholic my husband is 1 and he is driving me round the bend at the moment he is on a bender and causing alsorts of problems in our family sometimes i wish he would go out and not come back i know that sounds horrible but hes getting me so down. My 14 years son told him today i wish you was dead and he doesnt care 1 bit that hes said it can some 1 please help me i dont know what to do if i leave i really think he will drink himself to death if i dont leave my kids are gonna be damaged when hes really drunk he says really hurtfull things has any 1 else had to deal with this and what did you do thankyou x x
he knows he has a problem but only says he has when hes drunk

You and your children should start by going to Alanon meetings. This is a support group or family of alcoholics. You will meet people who are going through or have gone through just what you are. I know you are worried about your husband drinking himself to death if you leave, but isn’t that what he is doing now? You need to think about the impact this has on your kids. I cannot tell you to leave your husband, but for the sake of my kids, I would definately go. You need to worry about your life and the life of your children. You cannot save your husbands life. He has to decide when its time.

Andrea. Alcoholism is truly an evil and non discriminant disease that ruins lives. I have found that the best way to handle the situation is either through an intervention by family members or an ultimatum. You need to protect the safety of your children and yourself so if you need to leave then you must do that. It seems to me that your husband doesn’t realize he is an alcoholic and to accept that he is is the first step to recovery. Hope this helps.

I know someone in a similar posistion.Unfortunately there is no quick fix.What your son said to him sounds awful but I can also see how he seems justified in saying it.OK,first if your hubby niether knows he has a problem or doesnt want help,nothing can be done except leave him as staying will only prolong the agony.Please dont let him drag you down with him and yes I do know that its easy for me to say.All I can do practicaly is say that Alanon is for relatives of alcoholics.Be brave,look after those that you can look after and dont dwell on those that you cant.All my very best to you.GOOD LUCK.

This is a hideous disease that has the potential to wreck your whole family. There is no cure and you can’t bare their burden to the extent of ruining all those innocent people involved. They are mentally and physically abusive and the worse part of all is that it is inherited so any children can also end up with this disease. Of all the diseases out there, this is one I wouldn’t be able to tolerate. They are unpredictible, and you will need support from either family members or mental health counselors before you decide to leave. You will need a plan of what to do and where to go for the next drunken episode. I hope it all turns out well for you.
