A child at my son’s high school was caught with posession of an ounec of Cocaine?

Large Problem broke out at the high school my 14 year old son attends at. Right now I’m a student resource counselor at the same high school my son attends, I help troubled teenagers and many times they come to me if they have any issues/problems at school and/or at home.

Recently at school,a child in the same grade as my son, (he is 15) was caught in posession of an ounce of cocaine, apparently has been selling it since school started to his peers by grams. Since I am a counselor at this school, fortunately I was told everything that happened. According to the information, police asked him several questions about where he got it, how long he was selling it, who he was selling for; and it turns out this boy played dumb the whole time and wouldn’t give any information out, and the police were not able to get anything out of him. After 2 weeks, all charges were dropped and he was released scott free,nothing on his record or anything.. but was expelled from the high school.

Does this seem wrong to you? I live in Canada, so the laws will be a little different here. What is your opinion, I personally thuoght he would have gotten jail time, and would have been charged. Cocaine is a hard drug, and has potential to ruin people’s lives VERY easily..

An ounce of cocaine is well over a 1000 dollars.

I agree that he should have gone to jail too…even for a short time just to scare him. He should have gotten probation or community service on top of that! Since he just got a slap on the wrist, he’s likely to do it again.

Yeah, i want to know where he got it from too. I could use some speed.

Maybe he got off b/c it was his first offense, he’s a juvenile, and the amount of cocaine wasn’t very much?

I would put him in a intensive inpatient education program.

I don’t see how they wouldn’t charge him with possession at the very least. Expelling from school isn’t anything. I can’t believe he won’t be going before the judge, spending some time @ juvi hall, doing some community service and paying some fines, at least.
Unless of course he actually did give up his dealer for lessened charges and they just aren’t telling you.

no it happens all the time at my school and alot of schools don’t be naive i see kids selling Cocaine in the bathroom all the time i can get anything i want in 10 minutes there drug deals in the parking lot this year a kid i knew was caught with weed at the grad party the school cop took him in the back room and made him stash it in his pants and looked the other way so it happens ALOT and i live in a small town and in nyc part of the year so it happens both places and there not
cracking down any more as much here either

Best of luck to you. The best thing you can do is talk to your son abou it and if it is not going out of your way, talk to the person as it relates to your job.

The lure of easy money … Who can argue with a child who does not see much of a future and can make $1000 a week selling some strange white powder.

Hopefully, the school and court system in Canada can be harse on it. In the U.S. depending on the situation it is swept under the rug, the kid may get courseling or a juvie record. The lawlessness of the world is getting scarer the older I get.

I think we need a few more facts–though I do not know Canadian law.

I am a former prosecutor and I can not imagine why all charges were dropped–he is a juvenile, but would have been dealt with in juvenile court. In most states this would be considered trafficking and there would be a mandatory sentence–even in the case of juveniles.

I personally do not see why the school is letting him back in however–most schools he would be suspended big time.
